Granted, maybe a more intuitive method of updating DE's for users would be useful,
Desktop environment (DE) is just a software distribution. It has dependencies, it can be updated, update rolled back, upgraded and downgraded. Our focus on up-part brought us not once problems when new version doesn't work as expected. DEs with their dependencies make that up and down path (yo-yo) more complicated, even when older version of application exists. Ditto, for 12.3 and later versions we should focus to make this yo-yo ride as smooth and simple as possible. Example of software that makes this goal easy is kernel, although actually finding how to go up and down is a bit different story. Another example is Firefox that makes updates very easy, but it needs improvement in rollback part. Thinking of patch that will not only disable updates, but, instead, open package management with list of available Firefox versions. Of course instead of package management one can open support wizard that will ask user why to downgrade, offer help to fix a problem, ask forums, mail lists, assist with a bug reporting, and finally help to install last working version. What we will get with this? * More happy users. * Better bug reports. * More users aware of our "app store" that is way older then some commercial variants. * And, after some time, lesser load on support channels.
but that doesn't really make much sense for the definition of a release cycle because not all DE's release in the exact same month.
