Re: [opensuse-programming] Kernel update
Hi. Thx. man. Greate links ... especial first. Im suse 10.0 my mouse go crazy in moments. I get message in my system log: psmouse.c: bad data from KBC - bad parity Then I found after "google-search" that error about I wrote above come from bad kernel code. That`s only reason why I should to compile and install new kernel. I am obstinate and I wan`t to lose my suse 10.0 because I have a lot good software installed on it. I will try with this documentation and suse kernel rpm to resolve my problem. This problem is serious because mouse make unpredictable actions. Thx. again. Jerry Feldman wrote:

I found several, but these seem to be the most up to date.
Today, the Linux kernel is highly modular, and you should not really need to rebuild it unless you have special needs. B Also note that there is a large amount of documentation on your system in /usr/src/linux which is a symlink to the kernel version: lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 19 2007-02-27 18:44 linux -> linux-2.6.16.27-0.9
There is a README and a README.SUSE file. These should explain (albeit cryptically) how to build the kernel.

Hi.
I am trying to update my kernel but bad lucky. 2..6.13-15 -> 2.6.20.2 I going through all step from manual which is delivered with official kernel but on the end I get message: Can`t find file or foder: modules.dep and module loading stop.
The depmod[8] command creates the modules.dep file. Additionally, remember that SuSE incorporates patches into the SuSE kernel that may not be in a generic kernel.
Where can I found last kernel from suse or nowell which I can manual compile and install?

In general, unlike Windows, you don't have to reinstall software when you upgrade your OS, especially if the installed software is in /usr/local and /usr/local is a separate partition. Even if it isn't, simply back it up, install Linux. Linux and Unix systems do not have a registry. If you mingled your software with the base OS, then that is a different story. There are a number of scenarios, but with SuSE you can do an upgrade. While clean installs are always preferred, I've found
