You must export the CVSROOT environment variable: export CVSROOT=/data1/projcvs Regards, Håkon Hallingstad Software Developer, EDB +47 2252 8218 hakon.hallingstad@edb.com www.edb.com "IT er ikke alt - men det hjelper" -----Original Message----- From: Colin Carter [mailto:colincarter@exemail.com.au] Sent: 8. april 2005 09:07 To: suse-programming-e@suse.com Subject: [suse-programming-e] cvs I am just starting with cvs and think that I understand the documentation. Problem solved - thank you Håkon and Jeffrey Taylor. I will have to re-think the EXPORT suggestion you both made: I (newbie) knew that you had to export if one was moving into executing a batch file, but I didn't think I was doing that here. Also, contrary to your suggestion Jeffrey, my book (Kurt Wall et al "Linux Programming", page 142) said that the -d option comes after 'import'. But the info doc says as you say. Oh well, we all make mistakes, and it is a great book. Regards to you both, and thanks again. Colin On Friday 08 April 2005 17:27, Hallingstad Håkon wrote:

I am just starting with cvs and think that I understand the documentation. But ...
I executed $cvs -d /data1/projcvs init
This gave me the apprpriate set up in the correct place.
On a different day I set the cvs root thus: CVSROOT=/data1/projcvs (and I did also try /data1/projcvs/CVSROOT)
Then I tried to put my files in by cvs import -m"Initial code" name1 nameTage1 0.0
but I get the error No CVSROOT specified! Please use the '-d' option cvs [import aborted]: or set the CVSROOT environment variable
So I tried cvs import -d /data1/projcvs -m"Initial code" name1 nameTage1 0.0 and variations but have had no luck.
Anyone any ideas? Thanks for your time, Colin
