If all you want is a good makefile, then I would recommend taking a look at makepp project.
Syntax is similar to make but much easier since you do not have to take care of the dependencies yourself.

I haven't used it on big projects, but for my smaller tutorrial level projects, qmake has served me quite well. Part of the reason I want to learn the Autotools system is simply because it is used in almost all GNU C/C++ projects.
