Maura, I think you'll be really happy with SuSE 9.1 on a laptop. I've used it on my desktop since version 5.3, and on my laptop since version 8.2. My laptop has been my *only* work machine for last 4 months, and I have not had any downtime. I have Windows XP running inside of VMWare, to handle the Windows programs I can't replace: Visio and Project. Regarding hardware--HP and Compaq have great products and are easy to get parts/service for. You can get boxed at most electronics stores, or they can build-to-order for a reasonable price. Good warranty too. Personally I prefer the HP's styling, but that's a cosmetic issue. FYI: My machine is a 15" screen, AMD 2200+ cpu, 512MB ram (soon to be 1GB), a 40GB hard disk, built-in 802.11B, RJ-11 ethernet, IEEE1394 (firewire), CDRW/DVD, 56k modem, 2 PCMCIA slots, parallel, serial, S-Video port, 2 USB ports, and a keyboard/mouse port. It cost about $1000 over a year ago. I'm sure the feature list is even better now. Let me know if you want to see screenshots of anything running. Best of luck in your search. Chris Freyer
