Autotools are worthless and add excessive complexity and undocumented (or maybe ill documented) crap to your source tree.
That may be your view. My experience with dealing with quite a few software packages over the 10 years I'm dealing with Linux tells me that the autotools are the only sane way if you want to have your source code more or less adapt to different environments and give users the chance to easily modify defaults. Yes, parts are undocumented or at least not well documented, but you can learn the basics in a few hours. Writing good makefiles also isn't exactly easy, does that keep you from writing them? Philipp
