OK then, so what do people recommend these days for PPC machines ? any ideas ? I would recommend debian ppc for these machines. It is really a great distribution. Its most advantage is probably its advanced package tool, and ppc is well supported.
jops, Stoffel.

Hi!
So has SuSE given up on PPC?(!) Anyone from SuSE care to speak?
SuSE didn't give up PPC at all! SLES 8 for i/p Series is PPC and imho at its finest. Unfortunately it is only the server product and not released yet. Rolf -------------------------------------------------------------- The light at the end of the tunnel might be an oncoming dragon
Rolf, wasn't SuSE the originally indorsed linux provider by IBM for PPC technology? Any ideas what's coming up as IBM moves more towards power5 and power6 (Armada and Trex) technologies and platform mergers? Don -------- On Wed, 15 Jan 2003, Rolf Schmidt wrote:

Don,

I don't think that IBM will ever again go for one partner ;) , my 2 cents.
Any ideas what's coming up as IBM moves more towards power5 and power6 (Armada and Trex) technologies and platform mergers?
Sorry, don't know, ask at penguinppc64.org or IBM. Rolf -------------------------------------------------------------- The light at the end of the tunnel might be an oncoming dragon

There will be releases, dedicated for server usage. If you want something for the "mass market", convince the product management that there is (enough) demand for it. Gruss Olaf -- A: No. Q: Should I include quotations after my reply?

That's a bit strange isn't it? We having to convince the company that they have to make new SuSE PPC release instead of SuSE trying to convince his users to buy a new version? I think it's outrages the way SuSE treats it's PPC users. If there are no plans to release a new version they could have at least have the courtesy and courage to make an official statement telling it's users that there will be none. Maybe even offer a coupon for 50$ or 50Euro if you decide to move to SuSE's regular distro. But customer service and marketing never has been SuSE's strongest point has it? If this is the way the company wants to treat it's users it's only a matter of time before they will start to ponder about some things. How long before the regular distro will be pulled? If they invest in a product now will it be pulled next year? That is what people will be wondering about. A honest approach has never hurt any company as long as you give your users something to replace the porduct with. or offer them a discount. Just my 2 cents -- Tink - France
Hi PPC-linux users, Here's what I got today from SuSE as answer on my question for a new PPC release: "Leider muss ich Sie enttäuschen, denn eine neue PPC-Distribution von SuSE Linux ist wegen verhältnismäßig geringen Nachfrage nicht geplant. Es wird lediglich für den professionellen Einsatz auf Serverhardware den SuSE Linux Enterprise Server 8 for i-series and p-series geben. Mit freundlichen Grüßen, SuSE PreSales Detlef Wiese" that is: "I'm sorry, but a new PPC Distribution by SuSE Linux is not planned because of the small amount of interest. There will be only the SuSE Linux Enterprise 8 for professional usage on server hardware [IBM] i-series and p-series. .... " because I also prefer to have the same distribution on different hardware (x86 at work and PPC private) I would say: let's switch to Debian :-) Bernd
I know this may sound over the top, but why don't we just make it ourselves ? Olaf, the ppc kernels you work on, do you release the changes ? Are they still workable on the end user PPC systems, ibpook optimisations etc ? All we have to do is then have our autobuild to spit out the ppc distro. Olaf, how viable is this from a legal perspective and the stance of suse on this ? Justin (ex-suse employee :o) On Mon, 2003-01-20 at 15:51, Bernd Kulawik wrote:

For the record, I am waiting for SuSE to come out with a new PPC version before I upgrade anything, because I like to keep all my systems consistent. If one does not come out soon, I will switch to a new distro that does, Debian perhaps. I like SuSE, and I'm willing to pay for it, but having the same software on all my machines is important to me. -Corey Olaf Hering wrote:

Hi, Unfortunately, the ppc 32 bit market is a bit splintered lately. Given the losses in market share that occurred when Mac OSX came out and was usable (and getting better with each release), and given the number of ppc linux distributions out there previously gentoo SuSE Debian YDL (Redhat has a ppc64 one hidden away for professional i/p series) Mandrake TurboLinux MontaVista (embedded - Tivo) ...and I am sure there are others... there simply can't be enough demand to keep them all alive. Some shakeout has to occur. It is simply too bad we can not organize things into 2 or 3 distributions ourselves that most ppc linux people can focus on and stop fracturing ourselves into so many camps. I, for one, am going to focus my indendent development efforts on YellowDog Linux (since they have a hardware business too), and Debian. Both of whom have active development groups doing ppc work. It is a shame that Mandrake's ppc-cooker and SuSE -ppc effort could not get linked up in some way to keep a European based PPC Linux distribution for the masses going. It is hardly the job of the customer to do so. the customers just vote with their feet and find another vendor !!! you got the wrong attitude there, sorry.
