Hi, Somehow I got stuck with XFree86 v.3 instead of XFree86 v.4 then I installed SuSE 7.3. I guess the Installer did that based on the graphics card in the PowerBook G3 Lombard/Bronze (mine is the 333MHz pre Firewire). Any PowerBook G3 guys out there? Any luck with SuSE 7.3? Does anyone know if my PowerBook really *cannot* handle XFree86 v.4? Have tips how to do the install so I get XFree86 v.4? Problems I'm having with XFree86 v.3: everything works so far OK that I have tried (Konqueror, Kmail, Kdict, Konsol) except, - Gimp and Mozilla -- turn KDE colors all weird like they were inverted. Seems like the yellow spectrum is missing. Graphics in Gimp look fine and Web content in Mozilla looks fine, but either of those two programs are running the KDE desktop, menus, and panel turn into wacky colors. - Yast2 and Sax2 give an error message saying that my graphics card requires XFree86 v.3 and that they cannot configure XFree86 v.3. So I have been configuring with Yast1. Ak, what should I do? Any hope for me? Thank you! Roger in San Francisco :) -- SuSE 7.3 on PowerBook G3 Lombard/Bronze (333MHz pre Firewire)
Hi Roger, I installed SuSE7.3 on my Powerbook Wallstreet with some problems, but did it at the end. For installation, I used the fbdev driver and YasT2. I then specified the fbdev driver for X configuration because the ati driver of XF4 gave me some trouble at the beginning. I had then to recompile a kernel removing the ati driver, leaving only aty128fb. I guess you don't have to do this. Finally, I changed a little the XF86Config file so it takes "ati" instead of "fbdev", the other parameters being correct. Hope this helps a little Cheers Damir Roger Chrisman wrote:

Hi all, Kmail does not seem to display the gb2312 (Chinese) character set, not even the Raman alphabet parts of gb2312. Does anyone know to display gb2312 email in Kmail? Sylpheed I found Sylpheed, written by someone in Japan, and it looks like it supports gb2312. So I Downloaded Sylpheed from Freshmeat.net but can't seem to get it installed :..( -- ./configure error says I need glib and gtk+ but I downloaded those and they seem to need *each other* to install. I don't got no chickens and don't got no eggs neither! Argggrr.... <confession>I am new to Linux (been a Mac guy) so I expect this is teething pain. Even though I haven't figured out how to get XFree86 v.4 running on this PowerBook G3 Lombard I am plugging away in XFree86 v.3 and doing all my email in Kmail right now.</confession> I need to read gb2312 email sometimes. Any suggestions? Does anyone know what I need to do to install Sylpheed on SuSE 7.3 PPC? (The Sylpheed INSTALL.txt says it is compatible with SuSE 7.3, and Yellowdog 2.1, but no mention of SuSE 7.3 *PPC*. I think I'm lost in the woods 8-). Thanks! Damir, Hmm, I don't know how to use "fbdev" and the man page is too obtuse this time. Got any tips on documentation I might read on this, for a beginner (me)? Thank you! Roger in San Francisco :) -- SuSE 7.3 on PowerBook G3 Lombard/Bronze (333MHz pre Firewire)
Roger, Sorry for this late reply. fbdev is the "frame buffer device" and is a very basic driver for XFree, without acceleration or anything. One can force it by putting a video=fbdev as boot argument to the kernel. see http://lists.linuxppc.org/linuxppc-user/200012/msg00696.html Cheers Damir Roger Chrisman wrote:
