Hello! I am trying to install FireWire on my PPC Cube. I found on SuSe-Site an .rpm-Packet to install. There are a view problems with it. - It should, as far as I understood, upgrade the Kernel. - This shoud work, according to SuSe, work without problem. But, I have got problems with package-depencies. So, I installed it with rpm -U --nodeps... - now, the system doesn't recognise the datas modules.dep - I tried to remake it with depmode -a... Who can help me? As I know, SuSe 7.3 has got Kernel Version 2.4.12, but when I have a look with uname -r it shows me 2.2.16 why that? There is no support from SuSe-Side..., no Kernel with FireWire, no possibility to make backups from a Cube (But, backups are so important). And, SuSe sais, Cube is a supported PPC. Thanks very much for help! Peter, Berne, Switzerland

Hmmm, you should know the name, otherwise you may install something you don't like ....
- It should, as far as I understood, upgrade the Kernel.
Hmmm, your info is not very detailed, but I guess you read this article: http://sdb.suse.de/en/sdb/html/olh_ppc_sleep.html Hmmm, upgrade the kernel? It is a new kernel: [...] You need a newer kernel to use the features (5MB): ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/ppc/kernel/2.4.16/k_deflt.rpm Install the kernel with rpm -Uvh k_deflt.rpm The new binary to boot is /boot/vmlinux. [...]

I have no idea what you did before, but if you would have used the command mentioned in the article --> -Uvh you could tell us what exactly went wrong.
- now, the system doesn't recognise the datas modules.dep
Any error messages, or just a guess? You did what is decribed later in the article? [...] Using FireWire: Modify your /etc/modules.conf and add these lines: pre-install ohci1394 modprobe ieee1394 pre-install sbp2 modprobe ohci1394 To load the modules run "modprobe sbp2" as root, you can put that command into /etc/init.d/boot.local to load the drivers at boot time. [...]
- I tried to remake it with depmode -a...
And, what happened? Error messages?
Who can help me?
First of all you yourself with more detailed error reports!
As I know, SuSe 7.3 has got Kernel Version 2.4.12, but when I have a look with uname -r it shows me 2.2.16 why that?
And if you would have read the article with care, you would have seen the following line: [...] ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/ppc/kernel/2.4.16/k_deflt.rpm [...] ^^^^^^
There is no support from SuSe-Side..., no Kernel with FireWire, no possibility to make backups from a Cube (But, backups are so important). And, SuSe sais, Cube is a supported PPC.
Sure it is supported! And even if only the boot from CD would be possible, it would be enough for some people ...
Thanks very much for help!
Btw., I would have been more friendly if I would not have read the "SuSE is bad" and "Linux does not work" Mails from you first ... But with this kind of problem reporting I can understand why the SuSE support had no chance to help you!

How do I get my USB Floppy-drive working with SUSE7.3 on my PowerBook? I don´t remember the exact productname, but it's the thin USB-drive from LaCie with changeable covers in different colors. -j PS: I see that SuSE8.1 is on it's way for x86. I the PPC-version getting close to, or is there still time to give feedback on 7.3? -- Janus Sandsgaard Calle Crespo 20, 3B - Sopocachi - La Paz - Bolivia tel. +591 706 914 19
