Fw: [suse-ppc] Problems loading suse onto ibm p710
Thanks guys
I tried Tomas's suggestion of insmod=e1000 hostip=192.168.1.10 netmask=255.255.255.0 This got me past the network config selections but I was then asked if I wanted to continue, selected yes and got a kernel panic again. Someone has also suggested I might get further if I use com port 2 as opposed to 1, will give it a go. I also now have a copy of SLES 9 sp2 so will also try that. If all that fails I will try upgrading the firmware. I'll let you know my findings

You can upgrade firmware without a running OS.
1. Download the P5 Diagnostics CD
http://techsupport.services.ibm.com/server/mdownload/diags
2. Download the Microcode update files and discovery tool
http://techsupport.services.ibm.com/server/mdownload/cdimage.iso
Boot the 710, make sure you insert the diagnostics CD
Press 5 after keyboard POST, before monitor POST, to Start diagnostics CD
(looks like an AIX boot)
Once Diagnostics disk has booted
1. On the function selection screen, select Tasks and Service Aids.
2. On the task selection screen, scroll to the bottom of the list of
options, and select Update and Manage Flash
3. Insert the Microcode Update Files & Discovery Tool CD into the media
device, select Validate and Update System Firmware, and press Enter. 4.
Press F4. A list of firmware fix image files is displayed.
5. Select the image file that is similar to
/microcode/SqnP5/01SF2xx_yyy_yyy.img.
6. Press F7 (commit). The server firmware level that you selected will
be installed on the temporary side.
During the server firmware installation process, reference codes CA2799FD
and CA2799FF are alternately displayed in the control panel. After the
installation is complete, the system is automatically powered off and
powered on.
The server will update the Temporary side of the firmware and reboot, It
may take a LONG time.

You may also want to verify that you are using the most up to date firmware release (SF235_180). Believe it or not, this often helps!

You can provide following arguments to have your network configuration already done:
in this case there will be no DHCP request.
You will find SP2 for download links at: http://www.novell.com/products/linuxenterpriseserver/sp2.html

wonder
if
there is also an argument to "install" to answer the DHCP question, something like dhcp=no?
Thanks Martin

Hi
I upgraded the firmware and initially thought it had not made a difference
as after yast started the screen went blank again.
However I switched the screen of and on and hit the enter key and to my
surprise up popped yast.
I had tried toggling the power on the 3153 terminal when on the old
firmware revision so I believe the new firmware revision made the
difference.
It is still not great that I should need to do that but still least it's
installed.
Thanks to everyone who helped with this issue.
