Hello all, i have a iBook G4 1,33GHz (mid-2005) with Gentoo Linux running on it. Since I use SuSE Linux on all my x86 machines, I would like to know how the newly available SuSE PPC runs on the iBook :-) I installed the 10.1 beta5 via network. Now I'm trying to get X to work. Every configuration I tried so far only results in a black screen. Then all I can do is login with ssh, read logs and reboot. Starting sax2 results also in the black screen. sax2-vesa returns to the terminal and says: xc: sorry could not start configuration server xc: for details refer to the log file: /var/log/SaX.log Here the end of this file: -------------8<------------- (II) LoadModule: "vesa" (WW) Warning, couldn't open module vesa (II) UnloadModule: "vesa" (EE) Failed to load module "vesa" (module does not exist, 0) (II) LoadModule: "kbd" (II) Loading /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/input/kbd_drv.so (II) Module kbd: vendor="X.Org Foundation" compiled for 6.9.0, module version = 1.0.1 Module class: X.Org XInput Driver ABI class: X.Org XInput driver, version 0.5 (II) LoadModule: "mouse" (II) Loading /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/input/mouse_drv.so (II) Module mouse: vendor="X.Org Foundation" compiled for 6.9.0, module version = 1.0.3 Module class: X.Org XInput Driver ABI class: X.Org XInput driver, version 0.5 (II) v4l driver for Video4Linux (II) Primary Device is: PCI 00:10:0 (EE) No devices detected. This is known bug for beta 5 #153640. You had to update xorg-x11-driver-video package. Pavel

Yes, this works. Thank you all! Today the brand new iBook did not start anymore, just no reaction to the power button. That's Apple's high quality hardware. I brought it to the Apple Center for repair, so I can not go on with the installation for now :-/ Magnum -- Carl Magnus Rosenbaum M.A. Tel: 089 - 700 666 26 Administration - Programmierung - Weiterbildung Fax: 089 - 700 666 86 http://cmr.forestfactory.de/ Mobil: 0163 - 700 666 2 PGP Fingerprint: DEBC 3C99 EF1D 74F0 D4C7 EFF5 C268 3690 0EA1 7641

i have a iBook G4 1,33GHz (mid-2005) with Gentoo Linux running on it. Since I use SuSE Linux on all my x86 machines, I would like to know how the newly available SuSE PPC runs on the iBook :-)
I installed the 10.1 beta5 via network. Now I'm trying to get X to work.
No offense, but I would not recommend installing v10.1 right now in it's current state unless you are planning on helping them debug it. They have some issues right now with the new package manager and other stuff. Try installing v10.0 and se what you get. Then, if you are feeling adventurous, update it to v10.1. I have SuSE/PPC on 3 of my macs, and only 1 of them has had the new version installed on it, and it's a few cycles behind. ___________________________________________________ Try the New Netscape Mail Today! Thank you for the hint, but yes, indeed, I install 10.1 to test it and I also can help debugging. I do not intend to use this for production now. Installing 10.0 wouldn't make no sense to me, because the hardware of this new iBook is not yet well supported in the older versions of some software. And I am especially interested in the hardware support and how it compares to my Gentoo installation. I just want to try another distribution and look if maybe some of the strange problems I have in Gentoo also exist there or not. cu, Magnum -- Carl Magnus Rosenbaum M.A. Tel: 089 - 700 666 26 Administration - Programmierung - Weiterbildung Fax: 089 - 700 666 86 http://cmr.forestfactory.de/ Mobil: 0163 - 700 666 2 PGP Fingerprint: DEBC 3C99 EF1D 74F0 D4C7 EFF5 C268 3690 0EA1 7641
