Hello, My attempts to install suse-ppc 7.3 on a umax c600 have progressed further. The initial problem seems to have been my external scsi zip drive. With that drive disconnected, the kernel completes its initial loading and linuxrc executes partway. Since I'm booting from hard disk, it was also important to use the kernel argument hwprobe=-all (thanks Yvon!) The best results so far are with the 2.4.12 or 2.4.16 kernel ( I also tried 2.4.2). Linuxrc gets through the first few screens, where I select language and keyboard, and can review kernel messages. No glaring errors there. The problem seems to be mounting the CD in my internal scsi drive. Every time the install hangs while displaying the message "Attempting to mount CD" or something similar. With the 2.4.2 kernel, the install hangs just after selecting the keyboard, and I can't review the kernel messages. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! The MacOS is v8.1. I'm booting with extensions off, so the G3 card is not active (though I hope it will eventually run under Linux!) As advised in a recent post to this list, I downloaded the 2.4.2 kernel and ramdisk image. I am running BootX from a suseboot folder on my hard disk. Things seem to start out fine, with Tux the Penquin bobbing his head and tapping his foot a few times. The last messages printed to the console are:
SuSE installation program v1.1.18 (c) 1996-2001 SuSE Gmbh <<< Starting hardware detection..
Then it seems to hang, as it tries to read from the CD. Earlier, as the kernel is booting, it recognizes the CD drive as: Toshiba CD-ROM XM-5701TA Rev:0167 Are there any special kernel arguments I should be using? I never seem to get to a command prompt once the kernel takes over from MacOS. Any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated. Guy
