Robert,
I've got Suse 6.4 (2.2.14 kernel) installed on my Beige G3. I have SupraFaxModem 33.6 hooked up to the modem port through a serial switch box (it's set to the modem, I just wanted to include it in the description for the sake of being thorough).
I went into Yast and configured the modem for COM1 (yeah, wouldn't it be nice if the choices were actually - modem/printer port).
I then went to the auto modem detect. I saw the lights flash on the modem, but the auto detect failed.
I created a file 'afile' that contained the following lines:
ATH0 ATZ ATDT 5551212
I have a beige G3 with a SupraExpress 28.8 modem. I used BBEdit and some help from the Suse ppc list to get the following strings: ATZ AT&F1 These seem to be the strings that work on most Macs. After that ATDT .... calls my provider, although the modem sound is still on. I think ATZ and AT&F1 will do what you need.
So much for the good news. The bad news is that I cannot get ppp to work. I do get a login shell to my provider (I use kppp's terminal for this, after using wvdial or kppp itself to setup the connection.)
I'm sending this message from the same G3 under MacOS 8.1. I've got a reasonable dual boot system working here, except that any internet access has to be done from the Mac side.
In case you get ppp to work on the linux side I am very interested in your ppp setup.
I'll try and post this message to the Suse ppc list, but I had some problems with my email address, so if you don't see it on the list, please post it there. I'll try and get a new subscription that does allow me to post and not only to read.
I then executed the following line:
cat afile > /dev/modem and cat afile > /dev/ttyS0
both produced the same results, the lights on the modem flashed, but I never heard it try to dial.
