Re: [suse-ppc] suse linux and new power mac G4
You can find below the files you requested. The first one is the output from Display Name Registry 1.1, the second one from dmesg and the third one the gzipped tar file produced by suse_hw_info.sh. It corresponds to a linux suse 7.0 implementation updated with kernel-benh.rpm. Not working at the moment is: the colour map in X11 is complete rubbish (eg the standard Konsole setup gives black text on black background, but using the `System colors' of the Schema option gives you black on white. But still, you get colour problems with many apps. Do you have any ideas of how to fix this issue?? the accelerated video card support does not work. I did not try to update to xfree 4.1 yet (i'm still in 3, ie the basic 7.0 setup). Shall i try, and in which case, which XF86Config is expected to give me the best results?? ethernet does not work. I get the `eth0 can't locate modprobe module' error. It looks as if i don't even have the gmac module. Would this fix the problem?? Where should i find it?? sound does not work either. yast2 does not detect any problem and tells me that it should work (the sound card is an awacs card if i remember correctly). modem probably works but i did not try yet. As far as yaboot is concerned, i can boot using yaboot, but only by typing: boot ultra1:8,\\yaboot in the open firmware enviromnent. The oschooser (supposed to send this message to the open firmware) does not work. Is there a way to make this work, and in particular the use of the space bar to toggle between macos and linux, which i find very convenient ?? Thanks again very much for your help. jean-francois.

Do you have the kernel-benh.rpm really installed? Try to update modutils in /mirror/SuSE/ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/ppc/kernel/modutils-2.4.1-0.ppc.rpm and run "depmod -a" Then run "modprobe gmac" and send me the output of dmesg | tail You will see something like that: eth0: GMAC at 00:0a:27:e2:f3:3e, driver v1.4k4 eth0 PHY ID: 0x00406212 eth0 Found Broadcom BCM5201 PHY eth0: Link state change, phy_status: 0x782d Link up ! BCM5201 aux_stat: 0x003e full_duplex: 0, speed: 100 Your output will differ, you will see something with "unknown" PHY.

It needs some changes to the offb driver to display a correct color map. I dont have a fix right now. It seems you can boot without "video=ofonly" or do you really need that kernel arg to activate the display?

Run "sax2 -a" and replace Modes "1280x1024" with Modes "default". I'm not sure if you can change the color depth, maybe you have to use 8 bit. Section "Screen" DefaultDepth 16 SubSection "Display" Depth 16 Modes "1280x1024" EndSubSection Device "Device[0]" Identifier "Screen[0]" Monitor "Monitor[0]" EndSection

Its possible to fix that, just send the dmesg output as explained above.
sound does not work either. yast2 does not detect any problem and tells me that it should work (the sound card is an awacs card if i remember correctly).
Try to run "alsaconf" and "alsamixer", you can find the needed rpms for 7.0 here: http://www.penguinppc.org/~olaf/alsa/ alsa.rpm should be enough.
modem probably works but i did not try yet.
There are reports that the new iBook2 modem doesnt work, it would be nice if you can test it.

There is a compatible line in /proc/cpuinfo, your os-chooser needs that line. You can find a newer lilo here: /mirror/SuSE/ftp.suse.com/pub/projects/powerpc/lilo/ look for lilo-0.0.7-33.ppc.rpm, I will upload it today. Thanks for your help! Hi, Please don't send uncompressed files to the general mailing list. I am short on disk space right now and fighting to keep things going and I don't need unwanted 2 meg text files that could have been compressed before sending or better yet, sent privately to the persons interested and not the list in general. Thanks, Kevin On Wednesday 08 August 2001 09:19, Jean-Francois Donati wrote:
