Beige G3 tower 10.0 and 10.1 Alpa2 installer fails to boot
I cannot see to get BootX 1.2.2 to boot the Kernel that comes with either the 10.0 or 10.1 Alpha2 install CDs. I copy the file from suseboot, use gzip up uncompress it. Point BootX at it. The kernel starts to load and then the screen turns strange yellow/black olours and hangs forever. It does not matter if I use textmode=1 or video=atyfb:vmode:17. I have YellowDog 4 installed and it boots just fine. I have tried with both the onboard video card and the add on twin turbo video card. Ideas? Has anyone used bootX to boot the kernel from the CD? Thanks, -Joseph-

Please try 'video=offb video=atyfb:off panic=1', and try to disable swap in MacOS. -- short story of a lazy sysadmin: alias appserv=wotan
That did not do it. I tried with both 10 and 10.1 Alpha 2 kernels. I am using the onboard card. should I try an add on video card? Here is the output of lspci: 00:00.0 Host bridge: Motorola MPC106 [Grackle] (rev 40) 00:0d.0 SCSI storage controller: LSI Logic / Symbios Logic 53c875 (rev 04) 00:10.0 Class ff00: Apple Computer Inc. Heathrow Mac I/O (rev 01) 00:12.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc 3D Rage I/II 215GT [Mach64 GT] (rev 9a) There seems to be a bug in the ATI drivers for the Beige G3. I ended up using an old MCA card with the Mac DB15 plug in order to get the system installed. I set it to load in runlevel 3 and then swapped in the Ati card. The Ati card is very funky in text mode, but works fine in X. I also was able to use a regular PC PCI video card and a VGA monitor on this system and when BootX rebooted, the PC PCI card was initialized first. As for the IXMicro Twin Turbo, it appears that they have removed support for it. I was able to get my 9600 to work with the following command that I found in an old SuSE forum: video=imsttfb:vmode:17,cmode:8. I also found that when it starts the X Server, the colors were "off". After switching to tty1 and back to X with Alt=F7, the colors were fine. I have a 4MB version of the card. I was able to get it to work under X, but was unable to properly configure it. I switched to the Ati card, and it works fine now. This was in the 9600, but I was also able to get the Ati card to work in the Beige G3 AFTER the system was installed. Sax2 will not load with the change configuration with the Twin Turbo card..... I personally don't care for the Symbios logic cards. I've always had better luck with the Adaptec cards. Good luck. ___________________________________________________ Try the New Netscape Mail Today! Virtually Spam-Free | More Storage | Import Your Contact List http://mail.netscape.com
I am able to boot the 2.6.14 kernel available as a binary from: http://www.ppckernel.org/download/official-stable-pmac/linux-official-stable... I use root=/dev/sda10 video=atyfb:vmode:17 The textmode is definitly wonky, but works. I am working on using that kernel to run the Suse installer. I'll post instructions if I get it working. Olaf, Do you know what is different between the "stock" kernel that I have and the Suse kernel? Cheers, -Joseph- On 11/5/05, larrystotler@netscape.net <larrystotler@netscape.net> wrote:
