OpenSuSE for PPC/POWER available now
Hi all, we are glad to announce that the POWER team at SuSE was able to join the OpenSuSE development! With Beta3 we start to make available CD ISOs on OpenSuSE.org: http://www.opensuse.org/index.php/Download#Development_Build As we were invited to join at short notice, not everything is in a status we would like to have it. Beside that, we are confident that the current code is a good base to start with. There are allready some issues/bugs we know about: http://www.opensuse.org/index.php/PowerPC_Documentation In case you want to participate please have a look here: http://www.opensuse.org/index.php/How_to_participate For the moment, I would suggest to discuss all PPC specific stuff on this list, whereas it makes sense to discuss general issue (in particular if the are OpenSuSE related) on the OpenSuSE mailinglist: http://www.opensuse.org/index.php/Communicate OK, now have a lot of fun! Oh, this is awesome. Great news! Any hints on how to start the installation on a Genesi Pegasos system? See http://lists.suse.com/archive/suse-ppc/2005-Aug/0008.html for some more info on that box... Grab CD1/suseboot/{initrd32,linux32.gz} and copy it to your existing installation. The CD will likely not boot correctly, you can try to boot the /suseboot/inst32 file (maybe via network). But the OF claim call is broken on pegasos, so I dont have much hope that it will boot directly from the firmware.

It appears to work ok, I have added some blurb to the wiki. http://www.opensuse.org/index.php/PPC:Boot_pegasos

Thanks! I've just started to download the .torrent, and I look forward to trying it out on my iBook G4. This machine is currently running a version of SuSE 9.3 that I built from the i386 source packages. I have had moderate success with this method, but I ran out of free time before I got it anywhere near 'release' quality. I had just started to try again with the -beta2 packages, but it looks like this is no longer necessary. -Mike
