Re: [suse-ppc] NVIDIA Geforce2 MX 32MB SDRAM video card (new G4s)
Hi, Suse 7.1 will work ok as long as you are in console mode, but not in X (no acceleration, all colors are completely mixed up). However, if you browse through the linuxppc-dev mailing list, you will find patches by Ani Joshi claiming that Nvidia cards are now supported. You need a specific kernel though, plus the nv and riva drivers. However, it does not work yet if you have a flat panel with an ADC connector. The new yellow dog distro (2.1) is supposed to have this feature (Nvidia support through normal vga connector) integrated. Hopefully, the new suse7.3ppc distro (expected to be out any time now) will also incorporate this feature. Another solution is to change the video card to a standard ati one (that are very well supported under linux). I personnally have a G4 (not a quick silver, the previous generation) with flat panel running suse7.0, and i'm getting very tired of this video card problem. jean-francois -------------------- Jean-Francois Donati Observatoire Midi-Pyrenees, 14 avenue Edouard Belin, F-31400 Toulouse, France E-mail: jean-francois.donati@obs-mip.fr, Tel: (33) 561332917, Fax: (33) 561332840, URL: http://webast.ast.obs-mip.fr/people/donati
Thanks for the tips, Jean-Francois and Olaf. I am new to Linux. So adding patches or updating kernal could be trickier than I am ready for. Thanks for the info though -- when SuSE LinuxPPC 7.3 comes out I will try that, for sure. For now I will add a Rage 128 Pro w/16MB RAM video card to my Quicksilver G4 next to the stock NVidia card and plug my monitor into the Rage when I want to boot Linux. Got that idea from two guys on IRC (#linuxsupport) last night. They said with ATI extensions off (no acceleration) to keep it simple for Linux, the Rage 128 should work. Hope so, just bought one on half.com for $22.50 +shipping. Will try it when it arrives. Thanks, Roger San Francisco
