RE: [suse-ppc] Re: Unable to install - kernel freezes: more detai ls
question, this may be minor, but did you point to the kernel in bootx with a name like vmlinux - old xxx (I am at work) , and did you point to the compressed version on the suse 7.3 disk of the image?

What version of suse, what machine, which kernel, how did you start the install?
OK, things as they stand now. I didn't manage to repeat the performance that actually got me into linuxrc. So here are the answers:
1. SusE version: 7.3 2. PowerBase 180 (equivalent of a Mac 7500 or so), with a G3 replacement CPU. This setup works with 7.0 (kernel 2.2.16). 3. Kernel: the 2.4.12 which is located in the suseboot directory on the first CD. 4. I started the install by accident booting with an older kernel (2.2.16).
Currently, with above setup, external MacOS SCSI disk at SCSI ID 1, and external CD/R at SCSI ID 3 (no internal SCSI device, as I unplugged the defective internal CD-rom), I get the following boot messages (this is just the tail of the message, the earlier messages I assume irrelevant):

That's it - this is where it stops, and the CD/R LED remains on indefinitely. Markus Lischka informs me that he had a similar problem on his machine when upgrading to kernel 2.4.16, with almost the same setup. (Thank you, Markus). However, his suggestion to swap the order of the devices on the SCSI chain so far didn't work.

Yes, I tried both the "install - oldworld" and "vmlinuz - oldworld", which are on the install CD in the suseboot drive. Neither worked beyond the mentioned point. Herouth
