Hello, I am trying (again) to get cd audio working on my Summer 2000 iMac DV SE. There is lots of info around concerning digital audio on the new Macs but none of it seems to work for me. What does one do, exactly, to play audio CDs on SUSE? It would be great to finally resolve this. The README in 7.0 said that it is now possible but neither 7.0 nor 7.1 work for me using xmms and the cdread plugin, nor cdparanoia. In fact, neither applications can even see an audio cd in the drive. Thanks very much! Joss -- http://www.josswinn.org

Use xmms to listen Audio CDs: xmms /dec/cdrom

...like I said above, this does NOT work. There are many explanations for using xmms with new world macs and none work for me. Something to do with scsi emulation? thanks Joss -- http://www.josswinn.org

Which release do you use? 7.0 or 7.1? Did you try it as root or as an user? Hm, you talk about a cdread plugin, what do you mean with that? Here I took a plain standard installation of xmms, no change at all at any config and it worked the way I described (except for the fact, that there may be an error message regarding the cddb ...) Which permissions are set for /dev/cdrom /dev/hdc I guess sound in general works? Gruß vom Matze

I am using 7.1PPC (got a copy early) and am trying it as user. Looks like full permissions are set for /dev/cdrom(hdb), with root as owner. /dev/cdrom points to /hdb not /hdc cdread plugin is the plugin that everybody says is necessary to play digital audio via xmms on the new world Macs. The new world macs have difference hardware to the old world and require digital audio readers to hear cd sound. However, I can't even get xmms or cdparanoia to recognise track titles or a cd in the drive. cheers joss
