[opensuse-ppc] Offering to help test bugs, etc, for opensuse on Power
Hello, I read your webpage :Portal:PowerPC: https://en.opensuse.org/Portal:PowerPC I see you mention if we are having problems with something and are willing to spend some time testing, to send you an email. I have an IBM 8286-41A Power8 box and am both having an issue, and am more than glad to help testing any solutions for the issue on my system, or testing problems for other systems for that matter :-) Before I go into detail of my issue, I want to make sure I am sending this to the correct email address, etc. Please let me know what you need from me in order to allow me to test things for you, and to also report my issue so that hopefully it can be corrected. Interesting, I would expect there to be some activity with openSUSE for POWER since it is used quite a bit in the IBM midrange world. You mentioned I could “file a bug in the bugzilla”. Can you point me to the correct page, ect, where I would file for openSUSE for POWER? Thanks! John

Hello Michal, The problem I am having with openSUSE on POWER is that when openSUSE is notified by the IBM POWER firmware that the system is running on UPS battery power, it immediately starts a shutdown. It does not wait to see if power is restored, etc. So, if we experience a very short power outages - less then one second - the openSUSE shutsdown. I want to use use openSUSE for an email server, but cannot do that if it is going to shut down everytime there is a power glitch. My understanding of the way things are supposed to work with openSUSE on IBM POWER is that when a power outage is detected, the script /etc/rc.powerfail is supposed to be run. That script will wait a certain amount of time (configurable in the script) and if power is restored to the UPS within that amount of time, the shutdown will be cancelled. However, the rc.powerfail script is not being kicked off. The script indicates that the rtas_errd daemon must be running for the script to be invoked, and the rtas_errd daemon is indeed running. I am hoping I am just missing something simple. I have been trying to figure this out for at least six months now and it is starting to drive me crazy :-) If there are any questions, do not hesitate to ask. I have contacted the manufacture of the UPS. There is no configuration on the UPS end. The UPS contains a relay card, which sends a signal to the Power8 server when running on battery power. The UPS will then send another signal to the Power8 server when the utility power has been restored at the UPS. That signal is making it to the openSUSE LPAR because I see this when the UPS goes on battery power: ================== powerweb:~ # Loss of system power detected. System is running on UPS/battery. This message appears in the kernel: https://github.com/torvalds/linux/blob/master/arch/powerpc/platforms/pseries... The kernel shuts down immediately on receiving the MCE. Maybe raise the issue on the linuxppc-dev mailing list. Can't really comment on this design. Maybe there is some information in the event that would allow the kernel decide if it needs to shut down immediately and maybe the interface is broken and there is not enough information to tell how long the battery power can last and if immediate shutdown is required.
