The status is, my PowerBook is broken. I've keept my SuSE 8.2 up to date until july. Then I thought, a little bit more speed would be fine. I've bought a Sonnet Crescendo G4 card and it never got stable with it. And it got very, very hot now it doesn't boot anymore (the normal "ding" sound when turning power on, but then a "clatter" sound follows and nothing more). So I can't try to port a newer SuSE (9.2 would be fine, X.org 6.8.1 should give 3D acceleration to the old mach64 gpu) and I can't build updates for 8.2. All Packages are on the PowerBook HardDisc. If anybody is interested in, ask me. -- Machs gut | http://www.iivs.de/schwinde/buerger/tremmel/ | http://packman.links2linux.de/ Manfred | http://www.knightsoft-net.de

I am interested. even a 8.x series is gonna have half the stuff i'd like to run. I need to learn how to work with SRPM's (tarballs and checkinstall to make rpms is super easy), since at least the 9.2 source rpms are avaliable. here we go. Google is your friend: http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/questionanswer.do?admit=716493758+1103083794052+28353475&threadId=751560 looks simple enough. the only thing that worries me is i have yet to successfully compile a kernel. but with yast being released under gpl, if we get enough volunteers, we could spread the load. It's not a "SuSE" package, but since i use it, i'll volunteer to maintain xfce rpms. be a bit though, as I want to buy a 80 GB drive for the G3 before i install linux. the 4gb in there is just a bit small for my needs (my 20 & 40 in this are filling up. actually my /home is getting full. should have dedicated the entire 40 to it). Be nice to have a apt4rpm repository too. Now, about your broken one... Probably easier for you to find one on your continent, but, if all else fails, I have a 7200/120, 7500/100, 7100/66av7250/120 "workgroup server", and a performa 6200cd. also got a second g3 missing several key pieces (drives, heatsink, PSU, rom...). oh, a 5260 too, but that's next to worthless (i intend to put the 6200 logic board in it, and give it to my GF's daughter. she's got her own x86 for the "serious" stuff, but this would make her a nice "toy". or give it to her brother to keep him off hers). Got a duo dock plus too. (hey, not bad when you consider so far i have $40 invested in all my mac stuff) but any how I divulge. If you can't find a local replacement, I am willing to donate any of the above to the project. no G series chip (sorry), but better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick.
