I have installed SuSe 7.0 on a beige G3. All is OK apart from a mildly annoying, but harmless (I think) warning message on login about the 'mixer' not being available. However, I am trying to update the apache and mod_php4 packages without success. I have downloaded the rpm file from suse.com but when I use either YaST or the rpm -U command to update them it goes throught the process of installing but the packages remain resolutely unupdated! I have tried doing it from a normal login - with root permission - and logging in as root, but with the same result. Has anyone else come across this problem? The installation is only to serve an internal audience, so the updates aren't crucial for security reasons. But I am trying to install software (Midgard) which has a requirement for PHP4.0.4pl1. I solved the 'mixer' problem on a Mac G4 (SuSE 7.0 & 7.1) by entering modprobe dmasound on the command line (or terminal window in KDE etc). You should now be able to run the OSSMixer. I had to mute the speaker section to get my external speakers to play MP3 files (make sure the master control is not muted). Strange thing is, I can play MP3s from hard disk or CD-RW but I can't play audio CDs (they play in complete silence!) As far as apache and php4 goes. My default installation had apache and php3. I ran yast2 from KDE, clicked the software icon, installed php4 then uninstalled php3 (ignoring the warnings about dependencies). I've managed to get apache and php4 working doing this. Hope this helps. Anyone got a solution for my audio CD problem, or how to get the 2.4 kernel installed on a G4? -- John A. I also have a beige G3 running SuSE7.0. I encountered no problems updating mod_php4 but after installing the latest Apache rpms from ftp.suse.com Apache completely stopped working. Trying to start the updated apache only resulted in a cryptic error message. I tried to uninstall/reinstall/update it a couple of times without any success. Marc
