I've been having to boot off the CD since I installed this, no matter what I do. Let me run it down and maybe someone can help me. 1. Stock TiBook and normal SuSE 7.1 for PPC installation. I can boot to linux or Mac OS as long as I boot from their CD's. 2. Booting with no CD yields the following message: DEFAULT CATCH!, code=method <draw-rectangle> not found; ihandle=ffbc2a80 phandle=0 3. Does Suse require both yaboot.conf and lilo.conf? The manual seems to indicate this, but LinuxPPC only needs yaboot.conf 4. I've gotten some sample yaboot.conf files from kind folks but it doesn't seem to help. With the Linux CD in the drive I get the 'boot' prompt where I can specify the type and path, which works, but also seems to ignore yaboot.conf and lilo.conf as far as I can see. I would really like to start using Ben's updated kernel, which I've compiled and put in place, but I'm really getting stuck on this. Any help would be greatly appreciated. We're trying to port some of our stuff to PPC and this is the only PPC machine we have at the moment. Regards, Shawn Gordon President theKompany.com www.thekompany.com 949-713-3276
Hi Shawn, This might not be what you _want_ to do, but it is almost certainly the best solution for your booting trouble. Forget SUSE's default method of booting and set up yaboot with ybin and a bootstrap partition. This method is by far the cleanest and simplest way to boot into linux, and multiple operating systems for Linux on PPC. It will mean a complete overhaul of your partition table and you will have to back up and reinstall any operating systems you use, but in the long run, it is really worth it. You can find the info here: http://penguinppc.org/usr/ Read and follow the macfdisk instructions, then the yaboot FAQ and the ybin instructions. Follow them to the letter and it will be OK. Booting has never been easier. ;-) You might also want to drop Ethan a note to ask if there are any issues with the TiBooks. <Ethan Benson, erbenson@alaska.net> good luck. if you need any help, mail me off list. Dear All may be this is a boring questionfor you all, but for me it is fundamental: may you explain how to configure TeTeX to recognize local directories in which users put your personal .sty,.bst files ? do you use the lxppc yaboot binary? That one is broken on the August 2000 and newer machines. Use the binary from our CD or configure lilo properly.
3. Does Suse require both yaboot.conf and lilo.conf? The manual seems to indicate this, but LinuxPPC only needs yaboot.conf
lilo is only a frontend for the various bootloaders on ppc. It configures yaboot.conf and copy the needed files to the boot partition.
