Unable to install v10.1 on B&W G3
Hey guys. I aquired a B&W G3 the other day. I have since installed a G4/400 in it. I have only been able to get to the install point 1 time. I had to quit because I had to swap the HD I was going to use for the install. Since then, I cannot get past the first few screens. The system "hangs" and won't do anything. Since I only have an old 4MB ATI Rage IIC PCI card, I have to use "textmode=1" to get to the text installer. The install screens will "freeze" at various point and won;t do anything else. I can't get to another tty. However, the caps & num locks will light up. I had tried several different memory chips and CD/DVD drives as well as different HDs to no avail. I plan on getting a Radeon for it shortly, but really don't want to sink any more money in if it won't work. And, it runs Mac OS v9.2.2 with no problems. I have also tried a G3/266 and it does the same thing. I am stumped. Any suggestions would be appriciated. Thanx ___________________________________________________ Try the New Netscape Mail Today! Ok, I d/l'd v10.0 and I get the same thing. I even tried the "acceleratedx=1" command on the boot line and it actually started the X server, but then locked it up before really doing anything except showing the outlines and showing the spinning mouse clock. v10.0 won't start the install on the text mode either. Unless there is actually a problem with the board, which I highly doubt since everything else works, what else could be the problem? Are there any other known issues? This is a Rev. 2 board with the 1.1f4 firmware w/ the patch for the G4. I've tried zapping the PRAM as well to no avail......Could it be the video card keeping it from running? I don't have another Mac Rom card handy to check and that's the only thing I haven't swapped out.....Thanx ___________________________________________________ Try the New Netscape Mail Today! Try to boot with 'video=atyfb:off textmode=1' and see if that helps. The mach64 kernel framebuffer driver is buggy.
That helped out some. YaST no longer locks up when it starts. I will have to try booting from the CD and see what it does. However, SaX2 locks up and I still can't configure X. I am looking to get a Radeon for it, so hopefully that will help out. What about the Rage 128s? Any idea how well those work? -----Original Message----- From: Olaf Hering <olh@suse.de> Try to boot with 'video=atyfb:off textmode=1' and see if that helps.
