alsa-dev, alsapayer and audio CD (again!)
I think there was mention on this list recently of there not being alsa-dev on the 7.1 CD. I have it on my CDs. It is called alsa-devel 21:28 joss:~ $ rpm -q alsa-devel alsa-devel-0.5.10-16 21:28 joss:~ $ I got my CDs a couple of weeks before they were available to buy so maybe the packages changed, but I can't imagine why.... I would like to ask a couple of sound related questions. When trying to run alsaplayer I get this error: 21:22 joss:~ $ alsaplayer AlsaPlayer 0.99.32 (C) 1999 Andy Lo A Foe <andy@alsa-project.org> and others, see AUTHORS file for details Output plugin: ALSA output v1.1 ALSA->set_sample_rate(): parameter error "Invalid argument" ERROR: failed to set sampling frequency. Exiting... And finally, is there anyone on this list who is able to listen to audio cds on a summer 2000 iMac DV SE with SUSE 7.1PPC, because I have tried every bit of advice I can get and still no joy. thanks very much joss -- http://www.josswinn.org/humour.html

Can you have a look at the sound chip version? cat /proc/asound/sndstat Sound Driver:3.8.1a-980706 (ALSA v0.5.10b emulation code) Kernel: Linux kiwi 2.4.2 #1 Mon Mar 12 12:22:18 GMT 2001 ppc Config options: 0 Installed drivers: Type 10: ALSA emulation Card config: PowerMac [Screamer] (Dev 8) Sub-frame 0 The last line may differ. Here is the ouput you asked for. However, I'm not sure if this is the problem. The problem is that xmms and cdparanoia do not see any audio cds in the drive. I have tried all the different plugin configurations for xmms, different command line options for cd paranoia and none work. CD paranoia identifies my drive correctly and then says something like 'are you sure there is an audio CD in the drive?'. Quite sure..... Anyway, you know better than I do about all of this. Always interested in what you think. thanks joss 23:46 joss:~ $ cat /proc/asound/sndstat Sound Driver:3.8.1a-980706 (ALSA v0.5.10b emulation code) Kernel: Linux linux 2.4.2 #1 Mon Mar 12 12:22:18 GMT 2001 ppc Config options: 0 Installed drivers: Type 10: ALSA emulation Card config: PowerMac [Screamer] (Dev 11) Sub-frame 0 Audio devices: 0: PMac AWACS DAC/ADC (DUPLEX) Synth devices: NOT ENABLED IN CONFIG Midi devices: NOT ENABLED IN CONFIG Timers: 7: system timer Mixers: 0: PMac AWACS DAC/ADC 00:13 joss:~ $ -- http://www.josswinn.org/humour.html

I had a cube once and the drive was unable to handle audio CDs. olh@cherry:~ > cat /proc/ide/hdb/model MATSHITADVD-ROM SR-8186

You are proably out of luck. send cat /proc/sys/dev/cdrom/info
Card config: PowerMac [Screamer] (Dev 11) Sub-frame 0
Remind me again: the only problem you have with alsa/dmasound is the audio CD? Gruss Olaf -- $ man clone BUGS Main feature not yet implemented...

I will forward this info to our alsa guy. He broke the new machines a few days before we finished 7.1-ppc, it seems that every single chip revision must be handled separatly. I'm not sure if the current kde2 version behaves strange on our macs. Gruss Olaf -- $ man clone BUGS Main feature not yet implemented...
