Sax2 tries to detect the card, it uses a 640x480 default config, but that forces the framebuffer in that mode and it doesnt get back to 1024x768. run sax2 -a -m 0=fbdev edit /etc/X11/XF86config There is an section Modes with some "Modeline", remove these lines. There is also a section Screen, change defaultcolordepth to 15 Look for a subsection with Depth 15, there should be Modes "1024x768" There is a section Monitor, you should change the hsync and vsync, try that: HorizSync 31-50 VertRefresh 42-68 Save the changes and run startx.

Hello SuSE PPC people I'm struggling a bit with SuSE PPC 7.3 on my PowerBook G3 ("Wallstreet" 233MHz, 1998 model, with the cheap nasty 800x600 non-TFT screen). The SuSE support people have solved some of the problems, but others remain. I've now got XFree86-4 running (Yast2 insisted on installing 3.3.6 to start with). 1) Parts of the screen occasionally and randomly break up into horizontal stripes of colour. It usually happens when scrolling more than a screenful of text. And it happens both on a tty console, and within an X window. 2) If a tty console is left inactive for more than about ten minutes, it goes black (in the normal Mac screen-saving way). But then when I use the keyboard, it comes back on at maximum brightness, making it all but unreadable. The same thing happens if I use 'fbset 0' or the brightness button to make the screen go dark. The 'contrast' button doesn't do anything when running Linux: is there a command to change the setting? (The black-screen doesn't happen when X is running - it will run the Gnome screensavers happily for hours). 3) The keyboard (including the trackpad) has a habit of going completely dead with no warning. This too can happen on a tty console or in X. The only way I can find to get out of it is to reboot either via command-control-power or by ssh-ing in from my i386 machine. There seems no pattern to how long the keyboard stays usable - sometimes only a few minutes. I'm amazed that I've managed to write this email in one go... Has anyone else had similar experiences? regards Chris -- Chris Dennis cgdennis@btinternet.com Bristol, UK

I have the same problems with SuSE 7.3 running on a beige G3/300. There are also rendering problems in Kontour (i.e. a KDE applciation) when simply drawing a rect. My guess: an endian problen in the video driver.
