[opensuse-ppc] openSUSE on Playstation 3
Whilst there is some time until Playstation 3 gets launched in my part of the world (March for Australia), I thought I would promote the discussion and collection of resources required to get openSUSE running on the PS3. For those interested, the PS3 is a 3.2 GHz Cell processor that is Power 970 architecture compliant. It only has 256Mb DRAM, which should be sufficient as a multimedia front-end and basic other use. Linux runs virtualized on the PS3, (all hardware calls are done through the hypervisor). Sony seems to be interested in Linux and together with IBM and Toshiba (the consortium behind the Cell processor), are actively providing patches against the Linux kernel for the cell processor and the Playstation3 device support specifically. Resources: http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/people/geoff/cell/ Specifically the 'PS3 Linux Distributor's Starter Kit' http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/people/geoff/cell/ps3-linux-distro-ki... The playstation uses kboot that gets installed into the playstation flash rom and is selectable from the Playstations system menu as the boot image. The starter kit above has a customised kboot for installing Fedora Core 5. It would probably be possible to use the Fedora kboot and start a Fedora install and then do openSUSE similar to these instructions for Ubuntu. http://www.louiscandell.com/ps3/ But long term the first task would be create a customized kboot for openSUSE. I have created http://en.opensuse.org/PS3 as a location for documenting progress.
