Hello.
Did you ever get answers to your questions about configuring XFree86? I am in the same boat.
I suppose you are referring to http://lists.suse.com/archives/suse-ppc/2001-Mar/0027.html, or http://groups.google.com/groups?scoring=d&num=50&q=xsfbswitch. The only thing that worked for me was to edit /etc/XF86Config by hand. Linux distributions include utilities that ought to do this automagically (XF86Setup, xf86config, Xconfigurator, Xautoconfig SaX, xsfbswitch, SaX2,...) but I have yet to find one that works with with SuSE 7.0 on this hardware: Power Macintosh 7300/180 Apple Multiple Scan 15 Display (graphics controller: /chaos/control) (SuSE 7.0 docs say that XFree86 3.3.6 is mandatory in this case. Maybe there are new solutions with SuSE 7.1 a/o XFree86 4.0.x?) To find the correct parameters to edit into /etc/XF86Config, it's easiest to follow the procedure explained on this excellent page: http://www.linux-france.org/article/materiel/mac/xf86config.html. (Maybe others will know of an equivalent in English - I don't.) Herlent's "manip" is not one that would seem hard to code into a program... Then again, I don't know that it's been done. It seems important to follow it *to the letter* - for example, if I leave out the line with "Virtual" then it stops working. Extra twist in SuSE (7.0 PPC): a pesky script (/sbin/init.d/xsfb) wants to reinstate a generic /etc/XF86Config file each time you reboot! To prevent this "feature"(?) from ruining your efforts, you need to edit /etc/rc.config and replace CREATE_FBCONF="yes" by CREATE_FBCONF="no". Hope this helps, and maybe others will have better solutions or updates to suggest. http://www.kernel.org/LDP/LDP/gs/node4.html says: "The most difficult and frustrating part of any Linux installation and setup is the X Window System." hysterion
