Thanks to Joss for the tip on accessing my CD using ide-scsi rather than the cdrom driver. This does work as a workaround. I only get a hang if I try to mount a DVD using 'mount -t udf /dev/sr0 /dvd' for some reason. In looking through the patches for the kernel I found one called "70__2.4.7-pre6_safe_ide_audiocd.diff". Could there actually be an error in this patch? I noticed that it sets some variable check_media_type to 1, and wondered if that is the key why the cdrom driver isn't working for me. Once I figure out how to get a patched kernel so that I can build, I'll try to back out that patch and see if it works. Speaking of patching the kernel, is there 1) src RPMS for the BETA kernels? 2) some howto? The README says to patch a vanilla 2.4.6 tree with all the patches there, but I wonder which are actually applicable to the 2.4.6 tree as I see some that are called "*2.4.6-pre3*" and such. 3) A centralized group for doing the PPC kernel? It seems as though each linux distribution has their own patches. I'd be for supporting a centralized group w/ website, etc. Also, in my first message I meant to say "official BETA" rather than "office BETA". Thanks for the tip on StarOffice though. What I really am looking for is something similar to the Mandrake Cooker or RedHat rawhide. Finally, thanks to the SuSE team and others for supporting Linux on the PPC. I'm in a bit of a catch 22. It seems that out-of-the-box Mac on Linux doesn't work for me on Suse 7.1 for the PPC. I've got a Titanium
powerbook.
On a fresh install, I get errors with Mac on Linux.
The good news is that by upgrading my kernel to the one in the update/BETA section (2.4.7-12 or 2.4.9-benh) on the ftp site, Mac on Linux works great (plus I get better sound, can put the powerbook to sleep, etc.) Unfortunately though, for some reason the CDROM no longer works. When trying to do a mount I get "Wrong Medium Type". And by looking at the kernel messages I get "cdrom: pid 443 must open device O_NONBLOCK!"
Any clues what's going on here? I've been using Linux on the X86 for quite some time, but on the PPC it's quite new for me. Does Suse have an office beta program?
The 'office' quite for PPC Linux is Open Office, the open source version of Star Office. It is an unwieldy beast but has just gone into its first 'milestone' version is should be quite useable. I think it is on the suse ftp site or you can get it from www.penguinppc.org (although their ftp site is down for a while). Other than that it's the usual KDE or Gnome 'office' apps.
Where can I get the beta kernel source? The FTP directory only seems to contain compiled kernels. My impressions are that the docs/help for Suse are very good for the normal user, but I can't find too much for the developer.

The kernels are built from vanilla kernel.org sources and then a bunch of patches are applied. Those patches and how to apply them are with SuSE's/Olaf's beta binaries. See the README.
