No, didn't work. I read that there are special problems with Kernel 2.6 and BootX. http://www.ppcnux.de/modules.php?name=Content&pa=showpage&pid=79
That's weird. I will have to look at that.
It seems that the kernel needs to be told, where the root device can be found, which should be the ramdisk.
Correct. That is what the initial ramdisk setting in BootX is for, Normally, the system will reboot and you will see the penquin and the kernel boot messages. Because of the way that the old world macs work, you have to use the Initial Ram Disk UNLESS you spedifically compile root's module into the kernel and specify where root is. You also have to specify reiserfs as well. My Dell uses an initial ramdisk as well, and since anytime you download a new kernel patch, you would probably have to rebuild the kernel to make it work. Not sure about that tho.
But what device should I specify? root=/dev/ram0 devs=mount, all rw does not work.
You do not speecify a root device with the initial ramdisk. It is not needed with the installation system. You should only have to check the use initial ramdisk option and select the proper file.
My computer is a PowerMac 9500/200, 160MB RAM. The problem is that when I klick on "Linux" in BootX, the display freezes and nothing happens. Shouldn't at least appear a black screen with some text?
Yep. I have noted a problem with my 9600, which has the same motherboard as the 9500. If I have any of the following USB 1.1 cards installed the system kernel panics. I have tried 2 Opti cards and 1 lucent. Now, the Ali v2.0 card I have will work ok, and the mouse light comes on, but now I can't make it move the mouse pointer. Good luck. If it works on my 9600, it shoudl work on yours. However, I had problems iinstalling it on my 9600 which I think may have been related to bad ram. I would definately recommens you get a faster proc for better performace if you can. The G3's addition of the onboard l2 cache makes it faster than the 604e even thought the processor isn't as advanced. The 300Mhz 604ev in my machine will not work in your 9500 without a better powersupply. Good luck. ___________________________________________________ Try the New Netscape Mail Today!
