The problem: after a cold boot (yaboot on a suseboot system folder) my Apple Studio Display (15" LCD with ADC) remains off. (Regular boot, as one can argue from the logs and the sounds of the HD/DVD etc., but blank screen. This is not an X or incorrect video mode problem: the monitor remains off/blank during the whole boot process.) This problem is also common to OF (cold booting with alt-apple-O-F keys pressed starts a functional OF prompt with a blank video) but not to MacOS 9.1 which NEVER fails to switch the monitor on. (For this reason I think it is not an HW problem.) I upgraded to the most recent firmware, but after a couple of successful cold boots the problem is back. My present solution: boot to Mac Os 9.1, play a while around, and reboot to Linux. (If you immediately reboot the screen does not always switch on again.) Once in Linux everything, except USB audio, works flawlessly. Any further hints? Thanks and excuse me for reposting this question. Stefano On Wed, 30 May 2001, nicola moretti wrote:

Hi everybody,
I have a Mac G4 Cube (Nov 2000) with an Apple LCD Display (connected through the Apple Display Connector) with the following system
* SuSE PPC 7.0 * yaboot 0.8.SuSE * a patched XFree86 Version 4.0.2 * 2.4.2 kernel (k_deflt-2.4.2-2.rpm from SuSE)
It all works fine, but after a cold boot the systems comes up normally but the monitor remains off.
This problem is also common to Open Firmware; in fact cold booting in OF (alt-apple-O-F) gives the same problem: operational OF (blind typing OF commands produces the expected results) but blank monitor.
This (usually) means a hardware problem. You may try - updating the firmware to the latest version: http://asu.info.apple.com/swupdates.nsf/artnum/n12083
and/or
- http://til.info.apple.com/techinfo.nsf/artnum/n31300
...
Will a firmware upgrade solve the problem? Will the updated firmware be compatible with my system/kernel/yaboot ?
Good question... Theoretically no problem, but I guess that nobody would sign such a declaration...
