I finally got Suse PPC 7.1 installed at my OldWorld PowerMac4400 with: ATI Mach 64 onboard graphics chip , 4 MB VRAM ; Apple 14" Color display , supporting 832x624@75 in 16 or 24 bit color. (or 800x600@72 , etc); all very straightforward at a standalone machine, following the manual. All necessary packages were correctly installed using yast and the pre-configured "Games-configuration" of Suse PPC 7.1.
After a smooth startup using BootX, I can login as root (runlevel 3) and that's about it... I cannot switch to any Xwindow server or anything; trying to start "Sax2" gives a black screen for a second, and then my root-prompt back; entering "startx" gives just the following error messages from the server-log:
(**)FBDev(0): claimed PCI slot 0:17:0 ( I I ) FBDev (0): using default device (WW)****INVALID IO ALLOCATION**** b: 0x400 e: 0x4ff correcting (EE) FBdev(0): xf86RegisterResources found resource conflicts. (EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.
Fatal server error : no screens found.
XIO: fatal IO error 104 (Connection reset by peer) on X server ":0.0" after 0 requests (0 known processed) with 0 events remaining.
Then I again just get my root-prompt back ...
Can you have a look at `cat /proc/fb`, is OFfb active? If yes, dont boot with "No video driver". The Ati chip in the 4400 is a bit tricky, can you boot with "video=atyfb:vmode:13:cmode:8"?
NB: I also tried switching to runlevel 5 (one second a black screen and root prompt back); and giving BootX the following more kernel arguments at startup:
video=atyfb:vmode:13
I'm unable to get any XR86 configured like this; although Yast and the dancing penguin at startup work o.k and give a sharp graphical image any time... How can I make Sax2 / startx / Xwindow or any KDE desktop work ???
I guess the 2.4 kernel should work better, but try the above first. Gruss Olaf -- $ man clone BUGS Main feature not yet implemented...
