I just upgraded to SuSE Linux 7.3/PPC on a Mac G4. Most everything went smoothly, but I can no longer get any sound from the internal modem. Under SuSE 7.0, you could hear the modem dialing and negotiating with the remote system, which provides some useful feedback. After a while, you can tell from the modem tones if there's a problem with the connection. After the upgrade to SuSE 7.3, there's just silence. The sound from the modem (when it's working) comes from the Mac's internal speaker, and from an external speaker if one is connected. It's not clear to me how software is involved in getting the sound signal from the modem to the speaker. To Linux, the modem looks like a serial device (/dev/ttyS0), and as far as I can tell, the only software that "knows" it's a modem is the dialer (wvdial in this case). I tried connecting directly to the modem with kermit, and selecting max volume like this: ATL3M2 ATDT<some-number> Still complete silence ... There's nothing wrong with the Linux sound configuration, which is working fine for applications like RealPlayer, etc. The modem has a Conexant (Rockwell) chipset, and ATI6 returns "RCV56DPF-PLL L8571A Rev 29.00/29.00". The modem is still functional, but I miss the audible feedback while it's dialing and connecting. Thanks in advance for any insights ... -- Warren Jones Fluke Corporation Everett, Washington, USA
