Hi folks, Could everybody with a cd-rw drive try the following program, and see if works (ie produces lba output) or if it complains about I/O error (and dumps a kernel message saying so, please send that too btw). axboe@burns:~/proggy $ sudo ./trigger_rahead /dev/hdc /dev/hdc: trigger LBA 1024, ra LBA 1050 Thanks -- Jens Axboe

Can you please be a bit more specific on the circumstances: With pktcdvd loaded, udf loaded, with pktsetup done, with mounted, ... Sorry, just do it on the "normal" CD-ROM device -- /dev/hdc, /dev/sr0, whatever your device is. Nothing extra setup, loaded, mounted, etc. The reason I want folks to test it, is that if this works on some cd-rw drives I can effectively provide caching hints to the drive when doing the read gathering. It doesn't work on my Sony or Plextor (the only ones that are hooked up atm), but does on my Hitachi DVD-RAM and Toshiba DVD-ROM... -- Jens Axboe

And that's on a HP 9100, right? Doesn't bode well then, oh well... -- Jens Axboe

I have an ATAPI CD-RW ( from a supermarket ) which is originally a HP drive and " cat /proc/ide/hdd/model" reports "R/RW 8x4x32". I got no error messages, the output was: root@karl-delp-219:/home/chris > ./trigger /dev/sr0 /dev/sr0: trigger LBA 1024, ra LBA 1050 with ide-scsi loaded ( my default setup for use with cdrecord ) When I start it on the native ATAPI interface, I get instead root@karl-delp-219:/home/chris > ./trigger /dev/hdd ioctl: Input/output error and the follwoing on syslog: Apr 24 14:00:58 karl-delp-219 kernel: VFS: Disk change detected on device ide1(22,64) Apr 24 14:00:58 karl-delp-219 kernel: hdd: packet command error: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error } Apr 24 14:00:58 karl-delp-219 kernel: hdd: packet command error: error=0x50 Apr 24 14:00:58 karl-delp-219 kernel: ATAPI device hdd: Apr 24 14:00:58 karl-delp-219 kernel: Error: Illegal request -- (Sense key=0x05) Apr 24 14:00:58 karl-delp-219 kernel: Invalid command operation code -- (asc=0x20, ascq=0x00) Apr 24 14:00:58 karl-delp-219 kernel: The failed "Set Read-ahead" packet command was: Apr 24 14:00:58 karl-delp-219 kernel: "a7 00 00 00 04 00 00 00 04 1a 00 00 " So perhaps it works with ide-scsi ? -- Vale !
