Using kernel 2.6.8.1 with the packet-2.6.8-2.patch CD-RWs can only be mounted read only. Using kernel 2.6.7 with packet-2.6.7.patch they can be mounted read-write. details: ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- v0.2.0a mounts disk read only: Linux tabatha 2.6.8.1 #1 SMP Wed Oct 20 12:06:44 PDT 2004 i686 unknown unknown GNU/Linux packet-2.6.8-2.patch.bz2 pktcdvd: v0.2.0a 2004-07-14 Jens Axboe (axboe@suse.de) and petero2@telia.com /etc/fstab line: /dev/hdb /mnt/cdrw udf noauto, owner,rw,noatime, nosuid 0 0 pktsetup pktcdvd0 /dev/hdb # mount /mnt/cdrw/ mount: block device /dev/hdb is write-protected, mounting read-only I get this message in syslog when I mount a CD-RW: Oct 20 14:33:35 tabatha kernel: cdrom: hdb: mmc-3 profile capable, current profile: Ah Oct 20 14:33:36 tabatha kernel: cdrom: hdb: mrw address space DMA selected Oct 20 14:33:36 tabatha kernel: cdrom open: mrw_status 'not mrw' ... repeats 6 more times ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- v0.1.5a works correctly: Linux tabatha 2.6.7 #1 SMP Wed Oct 20 14:02:00 PDT 2004 i686 unknown unknown GNU/Linux packet-2.6.7.patch.bz2 pktcdvd: v0.1.5a 2004-06-26 Jens Axboe (axboe@suse.de) and petero2@telia.com /etc/fstab line: /dev/pktcdvd0 /mnt/cdrw udf noauto, owner,rw,noatime, nosuid 0 0 pktsetup /dev/pktcdvd0 /dev/hdb I get this message in syslog when I mount a CD-RW: Oct 20 16:24:58 tabatha kernel: pktcdvd: inserted media is CD-RW Oct 20 16:24:58 tabatha kernel: pktcdvd: Fixed packets, 32 blocks, Mode-2 disc Oct 20 16:24:58 tabatha kernel: pktcdvd: Max. media speed: 4 Oct 20 16:24:58 tabatha kernel: pktcdvd: write speed 4 Oct 20 16:25:06 tabatha kernel: pktcdvd: 553598kB available on disc Oct 20 16:25:13 tabatha kernel: UDF-fs INFO UDF 0.9.8.1 (2004/29/09) Mounting volume 'LinuxUDF', timestamp 2004/08/10 15:14 (1e5c) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Here are the details of my drive: # cdrecord -dev=ATAPI:0,1,0 -inq Cdrecord 2.00.3 (i686-pc-linux-gnu) Copyright (C) 1995-2002 Jörg Schilling scsidev: 'ATAPI:0,1,0' devname: 'ATAPI' scsibus: 0 target: 1 lun: 0 Warning: Using ATA Packet interface. There are a couple of reasons for your problem: 1. in your 2.6.8.1 setup, you are mounting the real device rather than the packet device. But in any case ... 2. ...the packet writing driver changed between the 2.6.7 and 2.6.8-2 patches - see Documentation/cdrom/packet-writing.txt for details of how packet device setup is now achieved. You will also need to patch and rebuild udftools. the patch is available at http://w1.894.telia.com/~u89404340/patches/packet/udftools-1.0.0b3.patch.bz2 -- Chris
