Hello, I use linux-2.4.21 with a slackware distrib. I have patched the kernel with the 2.4.21 patch available and compiled it successfully. I have been able to format a cdrw. The disc have been recognized by Adaptec DirectCD under Windows. Here are the commands entered in the terminal and the log found in /var/log/messages # modprobe pktcdvd Jul 19 15:10:28 darkstar kernel: pktcdvd: v0.0.2p 03/03/2002 Jens Axboe (axboe@suse.de) # pktsetup /dev/pktcdvd /dev/hdc Jul 19 15:10:41 darkstar kernel: pktcdvd: writer hdc sucessfully registered # mount /dev/pktcdvd /mnt/cdrw -t udf -o rw,noatime mount: /dev/pktcdvd: can't read superblock /var/log/messages Jul 19 15:10:53 darkstar kernel: pktcdvd: speed (R/W) 6/4 Jul 19 15:10:53 darkstar kernel: pktcdvd: pktcdvd0 Optimum Power Calibration failed /var/log/syslog Jul 19 15:10:53 darkstar kernel: pktcdvd: inserted media is CD-RW Jul 19 15:10:53 darkstar kernel: pktcdvd: Fixed packets, 32 blocks, Mode-2 disc Jul 19 15:10:53 darkstar kernel: pktcdvd: Unknown speed 0 for sub-type 0 Jul 19 15:10:53 darkstar kernel: hdc: packet command error: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error } Jul 19 15:10:53 darkstar kernel: hdc: packet command error: error=0x50 Jul 19 15:10:53 darkstar kernel: ATAPI device hdc: Jul 19 15:10:53 darkstar kernel: Error: Illegal request -- (Sense key=0x05) Jul 19 15:10:53 darkstar kernel: Invalid command operation code -- (asc=0x20, ascq=0x00) Jul 19 15:10:53 darkstar kernel: The failed "Send OPC" packet command was: Jul 19 15:10:53 darkstar kernel: "54 01 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 " Jul 19 15:10:53 darkstar kernel: pktcdvd: 54 01 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 - sense 05.20.00 (Illegal request) So I can't mount udf in rw mode. Mounting in read-only works well # mount /dev/hdc /mnt/cdrw -t udf -o ro,noatime Jul 19 15:18:38 darkstar kernel: UDF-fs INFO UDF 0.9.7 (2003/01/05) Mounting volume 'LinuxUDF', timestamp 2003/07/16 22:06 (1078) Can someone tell me if something can be done to make it work right ? thanks. Eric

Apparently, OPC fails for this drive. Hopefully, if the drive does not support the OPC command, it will do some kind of OPC internally before starting to write, so it ought to be OK to just ignore this error.
