I tried to do a similar thing with an iso9660 rescue + a r/w udf filesystem on the same cdrw but I couldn't make it bootable. Did you succeed in booting from your cdrw? If udf compatible with the El Torito standard?
Another thing that doesn't work for me is creating an udf filesystem in the second session.
No, I boot from a kernel on a floppy disk. Then I load a small file system from a second floppy disk just so that I can register /dev/pktcdvd0. Finally I change root to the r/w udf system. I have only one session on the CD R/W disk which contains the entire file system. Once I've chroot to the CD R/W, I can take the floppy out and forget it. It works, but I have occasional corruption problems. Your idea sounds good, but I have no idea how to put udf on a second session. I think you would have the same problem as I do. After booting with an iso9660 file system, ioctl would prevent you from registering /dev/pktcdvd0 since the device file would be on a read only (iso9660) file system. Couldn't you just use devfs?
