Hi all, I have problems writing data to my CDRW discs in Windows formatted in Linux. In Windows, it complains about writing to the disc is not permitted since the disc is write protected. How am I supposed to remove the write protection? Do I have to do this by reformatting the disc in Linux and enabling write permission to the disc? If this is the way to do it, how do I give write permission to the disc when formatting it? Thanks for any help and guidance. Alimin

I can't help, but Linux formatted work fine here with InCD. Using 2.4.19-2 patch and UDF from CVS. http://www.nero.com/en/content/download.html Better report the tools you're using. -- 0@pervalidus.{net, {dyndns.}org}

You have to put some sticky-tape over the write-protection notch on the edge of the disk (sorry, I couldn't resist... ;) ) Drew -- PGP public key available at http://people.debian.org/~dparsons/drewskey.txt Fingerprint: A110 EAE1 D7D2 8076 5FE0 EC0A B6CE 7041 6412 4E4A

I love people with such helpfull answers at hand. You should have a look in the archives. If I remember right, the problem is that the packet patch creates a UDF 2.0 disc by default, but Windows can only deal with the older 1.5 format. There is a switch to mkudfs or cdrwtool that leaves you with the option to choose the older format. Another possiblity is to format the disc in Windows. Regards, Ingo

My apologies if you didn't understand my humour. I was referring to the 5.25" floppy disks from the 1980s. Drew -- PGP public key available at http://people.debian.org/~dparsons/drewskey.txt Fingerprint: A110 EAE1 D7D2 8076 5FE0 EC0A B6CE 7041 6412 4E4A

Thanks Ingo. From the archives, I found a similar problem dated back in August posted by Gustavo Zaera. I guess the different UDF format is the problem. As you mentioned as well, I can format the disc in Windows and then write to it in both Linux and Windows, however, it would be nice if I can do the formatting in Linux. I tried using the switch parameter mentioned in the answer to the posting by Ben Fennema using mkudffs but I didn't have mkudffs, only mkudf which was not working well with the switch. Perhaps I should get udftools? (At the moment I use tools provided in udf-0.9.5) Alimin

Yes. Use 1.0.0b2 from http://ftp1.sourceforge.net/linux-udf/ It defaults to 1.50: * Changed default udf version in cdrwtool to 1.50 -- 0@pervalidus.{net, {dyndns.}org}

What packet writing software are you using in Windows? Ben

Nonsense.

Mmmm... as I can recall from the time I used WinDOS... Maybe marked as read-only ? (You know: right click on it, Properties -> check) Another possibility: Is it the same equipment for both Lin and Win we are talking about? Some CD recorders have problems with specific [physically] CD types. If it is nonsense, then could you please help by giving more useful information?

This is not just talking about writing to an existing file in the disc which has read/write permission problem. If this is the case I would have solved it but rather I am talking about not being able to write to the disc at all, not even creating a file or directory.

No, they are different equipments in different computers with different operating systems. I don't think this is the case of certain discs with certain recorders. Alimin

At the moment I am using Adaptec DirectCD 5.3.0.105 SP1. Looking at Roxio website, they have an updated version to 5.3.2. I am downloading it now and will test it later to see if this fix the problem. Alimin

Hi all, The problem is solved after upgrading to the new version of Adaptec DirectCD. I guess they are using UDF 2.0 now? Thank you very much to those that provide some direction and help..really appreciate it. Cheers, Alimin
