[opensuse-packaging] Packaging Policies - and how to change them: A proposal
Looking at our packaging policies, I see nobody nobody currently taking care of it and no real process to change them and make those changes known. So, I'd like to propose the following: * Introduce a simple process for changing the policies, e.g.: - send an email to opensuse-packaging with a proposal for change - discuss change - if change gets accepted by packagers and reviewers: + update the wiki pages + send an email to opensuse-announce about the change (we can also collect a couple of smaller changes and only send this out once a while) * I suggest to form a small team that guides the process and decides if there is no consensus - and better formulates the process. Any better ideas? Who likes to join the team and help shaping the packaging policies? I guess somehow double nobody makes somebody ;) please have a look at the following messages, was that similar to what you have in mind <http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-packaging/2012-09/msg00123.html> <http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-packaging/2012-09/msg00214.html> But as you can see I could not get anything out of it. Guess people rather want to discuss the version numbering and who is our potential user, but seems like very few care about the potential contributors, even though on almost every occasion people read this project is about collaboration.

Not at the moment but your proposal sounds good.

Yes, those kind of messages show the problem we currently have and that I'd like to help with. My proposal for these would be for the future: No discussion - thus means approved; please update the wiki with these changes - and then it gets announced.

My question would be how long should be the waiting time, before calling it no discussion -> approved ? days/ weeks /month(s) before taking the action. How about 2 weeks of no discussion leads to approval status or to be discussed with reviewers you want to establish. FWIW, that's the process we use for xdg specs. We leave one or two weeks for people to object, and if nobody raises an issue, then the change goes in. Works quite well (although I'd prefer if people would give +1 ;-)) Vincent -- Les gens heureux ne sont pas pressés. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-packaging+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-packaging+owner@opensuse.org

I can participate in reviewing new policies if time permits. cu Ludwig -- (o_ Ludwig Nussel //\ V_/_ http://www.suse.de/ SUSE LINUX Products GmbH, GF: Jeff Hawn, Jennifer Guild, Felix Imendörffer, HRB 16746 (AG Nürnberg) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-packaging+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-packaging+owner@opensuse.org

rather, adding an entry on the discussion page on the wiki would be much more natural, plus it would keep the whole story in one place. IMHO, Chris -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-packaging+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-packaging+owner@opensuse.org

Currently nobody is monitoring those and discussion is happening here, so let's continue that way, Andreas -- Andreas Jaeger aj@{suse.com,opensuse.org} Twitter/Identica: jaegerandi SUSE LINUX Products GmbH, Maxfeldstr. 5, 90409 Nürnberg, Germany GF: Jeff Hawn,Jennifer Guild,Felix Imendörffer,HRB16746 (AG Nürnberg) GPG fingerprint = 93A3 365E CE47 B889 DF7F FED1 389A 563C C272 A126 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-packaging+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-packaging+owner@opensuse.org

You can ask the wiki to monitor it for you (and send notifications to the mailing list). Chris -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-packaging+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-packaging+owner@opensuse.org
