[opensuse-packaging] Why has the Banshee/SLE_11_SP1 repository been removed?
Hi there, - dunno if this is the right forum for such requests - if not, please suggest a different/the right one ;-) - can the Banshee/SLE_11_SP1 repo be re-established please? This application is really superior to the other potential candidates (which are mostly also not supported anymore). TIA, cheers. l8er manfred -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-packaging+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-packaging+help@opensuse.org
Hi, I can re-enable those repo's if needed, but let me warn that Banshee 2.1.x and 2.2.x won't build on SLE11 and SLE11_SP1 because of missing dependencies. GStreamer needs to be updated for a higher release for example, amongst other packages. It makes no sense to include on the Banshee repository those kind of updates because it will bring problems. Many people are not aware of many issues that the Banshee repository had in other platforms and the negative impact... So I'll give a quick example of something that happened in the past: * Platform > openSUSE 11.4 Banshee repository had some Mono packages on it (ex: mono-addins). This means that Banshee was built against a specific mono-addins version and installing it would update the package from the distro. Such would make other application fail (ex: F-Spot). So the general rule is that Banshee repository should provide only the very own dependencies not provided by the platform. If we have too much stuff there we're running into problems. This has nothing to do with SLE11 and SLE11SP1, but many of those packages were there because of those platforms. I can disable builds for those packages in newer platforms... But it won't help because neither SLE11 or SLE11SP1 will provide the required versions of other components required to build Banshee 2.2 series. My offer for SLE users is simple, I can make a Banshee:SLE11 repository and provide the latest version of banshee that builds for those platforms (2.0.1 for SLE11SP1 and the latest from the 1.x series for SLE11). Would that help ? NM 2011/9/21 Manfred Hollstein <mh@suse.com>:

Absolutely! What you described above is exactly what I found out myself, and this is why I set the Banshee repo to a lower priority than the SLE repos to not replace the OS core components (and thus un-installing f-spot, tomboy and the likes - not that I use them, but my daughters do... ;-).

Hi Manfred, Banshee 2.2.0 was released a few minutes ago :) I'm going to add a new repository for SLE11 and SLE11SP1 and will provide a good clean repository for their users without the problems I described earlier. This might take a few days though, but I'll reply once it's done. I don't have a SLE install so I can't really test it, can I mail you in private once I need some testing ? :) Thanks, glad to help, NM 2011/9/21 Manfred Hollstein <mh@suse.com>:
