[opensuse-packaging] beagle, tracker & obsoletion fun for 11.3
Hi friends, For openSUSE 11.3, the GNOME team switched to tracker by default instead of beagle for the indexer. Beagle is still available for those who want it (we'll drop it in the next cycle). However, one thing I just realized is that for people upgrading from previous versions of openSUSE, they will likely get both beagle and tracker installed. And possibly indexing stuff. Which sounds wrong. So I'm wondering: should tracker obsolete beagle (as in Obsoletes tag)? Even though beagle is still available? Not obsolete but conflicts and beagle does the same for tracker. That way only one of them may be installed and that is what you want, issn't it? Philipp -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-packaging+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-packaging+help@opensuse.org

Ah, that'd be better indeed. But I'm wondering: a conflict will likely result in beagle staying installed, though, while by default, we'd want to have tracker installed and beagle removed. Or am I guessing wrong? Do tracker and beagle conflict in any way? or can they run parallel? If not, it is hard to express RPM dependency wise.. You can do above trick of course, but its probably unfair to the Beagle users. They don't conflict, but it's a waste of cpu and disk resources to have both running in parallel. And I'm afraid that the people it might hit the most are people who wouldn't know about what is beagle/tracker :/ Vincent -- Les gens heureux ne sont pas pressés. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-packaging+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-packaging+help@opensuse.org

Can we make it so that beagle does not start auto-indexing? This would allow beagle to be installed in parallel but not duplicating work. Or have tracker when run disable beagle... Beagle, by default, is disabled. But we make it easy to change this, and it's likely some users will have enabled it. They might not remember to disable it again, though.
Or have tracker when run disable beagle...
Yeah, I was thinking about this one. This might be the best option, indeed. Thanks, Vincent -- Les gens heureux ne sont pas pressés. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-packaging+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-packaging+help@opensuse.org
