I'm asking Wolfgang directly instead of only a list because of firefox-esr changelog, and http://lists.opensuse.org/ doesn't indicate a good place for Mozilla questions spanning different OS releases.
Most lists are fine for me if I can recognize the subject.
IIUC, 24 is scheduled to take over esr soon. I don't want anything newer than 22 installed as default Firefox anywhere around here. Its UI has been dumbed down too much. I'd rather 17 for normal use as long as it's viable, with SeaMonkey and Konq for things requiring latest features and/or security updates. Maybe others have similar feelings and would like access to a 17-latest rpm in 13.1 now that beta1 has been announced.
12.3 has latest, 17.0.9, available in mozilla/openSUSE_12.3 repo.
Yes, so has 13.1.
13.1 has 6 month old 17.0.4 available in mozilla:/experimentalopenSUSE_Factory repo.
Not anymore since a few seconds since it apparently is confusing to users. As long as I don't ask certain people to look at mozilla:experimental it should not exist for people. I'm using it sometimes to try "experimental" things w/o disturbing "production" repos. Project description: "Temporary experimental repository for mozilla stuff. DO NOT USE UNLESS YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING"
1-Is old version for 13.1 oversight?
Not sure what old version 13.1 means here. I've enabled 13.1 only when it was useful shortly after 13.1 beta 1 was out in the mozilla repo. Probably you checked before builds and repos were finished?
2-Can 12.3's rpm be installed in 13.1 without need to backlevel deps/libs?
Not sure and not needed.
3-Why isn't esr available in a standard Factory/13.1 repo instead of "experimental"?
It is.
Why does BS have a lot of what looks like the same thing under two different names? e.g. mozilla/ mozilla:/
Other than different names and different subdirs, what's the distinction between those with and without ":"?
That is an OBS specific thing. You get a suffixed repo name as soon as you have sub projects since it's an OBS internal delimiter. So mozilla: is just carrying subprojects while mozilla carries the main project's content. About Firefox ESR and especially 17: I haven't created a package for Firefox 24 ESR yet. So currently 17.0.9 is the latest firefox-esr available. I will create a 24ESR package as soon as the next minor update is out which will end up in "mozilla". firefox-esr 17 will stay in mozilla as well as long as it gets updates. zypp nevertheless would update to 24 as the latest available version though unless you do explicit updates/installations for 17.0.x. Also as soon as firefox-esr 17 runs out of upstream maintenance (after two more releases I think) it will go away from the main mozilla repo but I will move it to mozilla:legacy (that's where some unmaintained packages are collected which need to stay alive for a bit still).
