I've been asked why we have devel projects and why a package should use one. Looking around I found not directly a good answer - and only these two pages:
http://en.opensuse.org/Build_Service/Concepts/Upstream_Project http://news.opensuse.org/2009/06/18/opensuse-factory-is-now-open/
Do we have anything better? If not: Anybody interested in writing something up?
It is part of our collaboration concept: http://en.opensuse.org/Build_Service/Collaboration In theorie, we could also skip devel project for all or single packages, but that would mean: * 3rd party submissions would bypass the maintainer * load&review work would not be scalable for Factory check-in people. * Caused breakage of stuff is less easy to spot before check-in * new versions would be either in often changing projects (bad for followers) * The devel project information is also kind of a trust information, it points to projects which have been evaluated once as good enough for openSUSE distro contributions. bye adrian
