Hi Stefan I think we should start using this list and I have replied to your message via the mailing list. Can you subscribe to it please and reply to it via the list?
Did you get a chance to try out PePr?
I have put a second release on my page which tries to make sure that it really runs in the background and does not impact the user. This is necessary because my personal
No ... Family time ..... and tomorrow will also be spend with my kids .... preload
file lists more than 2000 files. Preloading those takes a while ;) I would really know how PePr performs now, especially since startup times seem to have decreased a lot for beta3 even without SUPER.
Also note that the syntax for the preload file has changed with
Yeah ... good stuff :) .. my test (look at the benchmark for beta3 ... says the same. I am very happy about SUSE! I am running the x86_64 beta3 on my home machine and it sure is fast even without any mods .... preload
0.2, so your KDE preloading during boot probably does not work any longer.
I will not test beta3, only beta4. Beta4 will contain the (hopefully) final&working version of Suse's preload package, which includes support for preloading after KDE startup. So the first pieces of SUPER have already made their way into the official openSUSE release! They are (as far as I can see) not enabled by default, but very easy to activate.
Beta4 will also give me the opportunity to integrate your KDE
Yes I know ..... fantastic! ... We are making a difference already ..... and this is just the beginning. Good work! preloading
into the boot process in a cleaner way.
It is done right after mount, very early on in S08boot.preload_early and S10boot.preload as I had suggested boot.preload at the same time with boot.localnet.
I want to wait until beta4 because now Suse also preloads stuff. They only preload files used during bootup, but this might change the situation enough that it becomes necessary to adapt KDE preloading to not interfere with boot preloading. Stephan Kulow from Suse has told me that as far as preloading is concerned, beta3 does not contain all the bells and whistles that beta4 will contain, so this has to wait for a few days. I also plan to integrate GNOME preloading for the GNOME users.
I have seen the message from Coolo in bugzilla also ... I agree that we should hold off with any more work until beta4 comes out. I won't be able to do too much until then anyhow. And I will have beta4 on Wednesday ..... and Thursday it is released .... not much time our real work will start once rc is done and especially once final is done. Then at least things won't change as much and we can concentrate on our speed-install iso's. Once we have done our first SUPER we can concentrate on doing more .... Well done Stefan for your excellent work with preloading and getting it into beta3-4!
