Look if there are ipw2200 firmware errors anywhere in /var/log/messages ("Firmware error detected. Restarting" or so). If yes, only Intel can help - firmware errors are usually caused by incorrect driver<->firmware communication but that interface is undocumented. Use Intel bugzilla at http://www.intellinuxwireless.org/bugzilla/ in such case. If not, please fill a bug report to our bugzilla (http://bugzilla.novell.com/).

Google indicates this is the Intel pro/wireless driver. However, I am not using wireless networking (the eth0 is now disabled), and these messages appeared immediately after a fresh install of openSUSE 11.0

Unfortunately, the "feature" of ipw2200 is to periodically perform a scan even when it is supposed to be off. Yes, it's a really bad behaviour.
