OK, sometime in the last week or so sound on my system has stopped working. I suspect is has to do with one of the security patches (I seem to recall two kernel patches in the last few weeks?), but am not sure. I've tried unistalling the driver and reinstalling. I think I'm already running the latest version of ALSA (I compiled and installed myself since the sound wasn't working with the older version included with SuSE 9.0). I've been poking around with this for a bit no with no luck! :( Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!! OK, the info: I'm running SuSE 9.0 on an Asus A7V600 motherboard with an Athalon 2800 CPU. I've been using the integrated sound controller, ADI 1980 (AC'97 compliant codec). I'm using ALSO V1.0.4 - I've reinstalled ALSA since noticing my sound stopped working. I don't get any system sounds at all, nor does realplayer8 work. In fact, real player seems to hang now when it starts. However, KSCD plays music cd's just fine! YaST reports that the driver is running fine. Unistalling the driver and restarting the sound module, YaST shows the card in it's detected list. Reinstalling the driver causes no errors, but trying the tests produces no sound. This system is only a little more than a month old. However, I was using this sound controller with this install of SuSE successfully for a few weeks. I've also rebooted into XP to game, and the sound works fine still under windows, so neither the controller nor speakers have suffered a failure. Here are some messages in /var/log/warn generated at the same time which seem to be related to snd. However I have been unable to replicate these messages with >modprobe snd-via82xx or by launching realplayer on an audio stream. This has happened to me sometimes w/ my laptop. Here's what I do: * check the volume control dial... Sometimes pulling the laptop from its bag turns the volume all the way down. * sometimes after an online update, I have to run gamix to turn the master volume back on and turn my mic back on. (I lost 2 lectures worth of stuff over this one) On Wed, 12 May 2004 12:41pm, Sean Quinlan wrote:

OK, I know I tried adjusting the volumes with some other tool under KDE (exactly which escapes me), as well as the YaST sound modules volume controls, with no luck. However running gamix did show a master volume set to 0, and raising that fixed my problem. Many many thanks! -- Sean Quinlan <sean@quinlan.org>
