Well business as usual. Everything is great! I did update the system with a 170MB download. I still think that I probably got another system than everybody is bragging about. By default my suse tries to open .avi files with aktion. Unfortunately there is no aktion installed. If you do a lot of reading thru manuals you find out that you are supposed to copy the dlls for aktion from your windowssystem. Now what do you do if you dont have windows plus what dlls would that be? Dont get me wrong - suse is a good value and a nice system. But if you want to beat out Billy you gonna have to do better than this. Looks to me like Linux is still in the stages where you better know how to write your own software. Unfortunately I dont know how to do that. I cant even get the font for email changed anymore.

Klaus, you make a very strong argument here. AVI is however something that Microsoft started and while SuSE may ship with thousands of applications, most users just need an Office Suite, a good web browser and a reliable media player. Linux and Unix are about freedom but unfortunately, that sometimes means you have the responsibility to make yourself knowledgeable to a degree that you do not have to under WIN whatever. Don't forget how horrible WIN3.X were and how you have had to live with the BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH for a very long time. SuSE can not ship files that are not properly licensed. Most everything is GPLed (GNU Plublic License or copy-lefted) or freeware Certain file formats and codecs are proprietary and hence since they are not offered by the owners, one must have access to a system that provides these. It should be that SuSE, Linux and Unix are that easy to use but we aren't there quite yet. Apple doesn't even offer QuickTime with Sorenson though that would be easy for them to do so (there is a third party Sorenson quicktime player). In order to compete on the desktop with Gates, we need to be as easy to use and administor. We aren't there yet but we are getting a lot closer. We also need some major 3rd party players to provide quality apps to Linux. Besides supporting SuSE, it helps to support third party software vendors were appropriate. This may be hard to believe but SuSE is MUCH easier to use than Linux used to be and Unix requires a lot of knowledge. We will not be successful in beating Mr. Balmer and mr. Gates until we are as easy to use. That is a hard challenge. Your comments are very helpful. As to your e-mail font problem, it looks like you are using Netscape 6.1 and I recommend going to Edit->Preferences->Mail&Newsgroups and verify that you are using "Composer" to author e-mail messages and not "plain text". Take it easy. R. W. Pearson _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Get your free @yahoo.com address at http://mail.yahoo.com
