Thanks all.
My problem is solved.
Getting the kernel and source in sync then setting all up in sax2 when in init 3 proved to solve it at last. Some of the other stunts along the way, may have contributed - I couldn't tell.
Thanks again.

Thanks that brought me a bit further. Unfortunantly I'm not quite there yet.
I removed kernel sources, installed them again, ran YOU and rebooted. I then followed the instructions stated below (make cloneconfig, make prepare-all, init 3 and ran the nvidia-installer again) which brought me to a position where the installer warned me that "rivafb" was included as a loadable module and that that might cause conflicts. I proceeded and the installer terminated cleanly. I ran Sax2 which detected me NVidia 0x0281 card. I started X and proceeded to Sax2 in graphical mode to enable 3D acceleration. I ran the "test" which gave the following: X Server test failed NVIDIA(0): *** aborting *** Screen(s) found, but none have usable configuration
What's next?
Do a init 3 and modprobe nvidia manually as root.
Does it work? Does lsmod report the nvidia module? Start sax2 again (in the console window under runlevel 3) and enable 3D acceleration.
Carsten.

Yes, that's pretty much the standard drill, just following the nvidia-suse install howto.
Not bad, but it is a few steps that some people would rather not have to deal with, so suse does provide the easy default install method, where you just click on the "install nvidia drivers" checkbox in yast, and don't worry about the details. On new installations, I simply check that box and voila, I have accelerated 3D. However, the driver does tend to get stale, as it remains at a static version, and in some cases the acceleration stops happening. In this case, or if you just want the latest and greatest drivers, it's good to know the drill.

Indeed, most of the time that will do, and it usually works very well. The problem is, as you mentioned, with stale drivers. For instance, the SuSE script fetches 6111 drivers, the most recent being 6629. There's a significant difference in performance from one to the other (e.g., about 30% better performance in doom3 with 6629, at least in amd64 platforms).
On the other hand, you have to be prepared to deal with more things manually, for instance, the 6629 version of the drivers needs at least one patch to work properly (see patch in thread: http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=40126&page=1&pp=15). As usual, a trade off between convenience, stability and raw performance...
But such is life, Grasshopper :)
Cheers

Interesting - I've upgraded to the 6629 driver on several linux systems (all suse pro 9.2) and never patched any of them. The thread you referenced seems to indicate that there is a problem running windows games under wine, without the patches, which would explain why I had no problems:
I run only native linux games (ut2004, quake 3, doom3 etc)
