Hello list, does anyone know to get work Hewlett Packard ScanJet 4c with Symbios Logic 53c400a (HP Version) SCSI Adapter under SuSE Linux? I've got that scanner and tried to install it with Yast, but i have got the message, that there is no SCSI - Scanner. My system: SuSE Linux 8.0 Professional (but i am not professional enough, i fear). Any solution? regards, Christof Schmitt

Have you made the scanner work with that card in any other version of linux or one of those dos shells? Do you have the scanner terminated, is it on the end of the chain, how does termination work with the Symbios card? Does Yast/2 see the card, you said it didn't see the scanner? Was the scanner powered on when you tried to install it? Thanks for the answer. I checked cdrecord-scanbus and it shows nothing but my cdrecorder and my dvd-rom - no scanner is found. Now I think I have found the main problem and a possible solution, but it doesn't work until now. The problem is the 'Symbios Logic 53c400A (HP Version) SCSI Adapter' and there is a solution described in a 'Readme.g_NCR5380'. This adapter should work after a 'modprobe g_NCR5380 ncr_irq=255 ncr_addr=0xc8000 ncr_53c400=1' or 'modprobe g_NCR5380 ncr_irq=254 ncr_addr=0xc8000 ncr_53c400=1'. I tried both versions (ncr_irq=254 and ncr_irq=255), but both result a frozen screen. In a forum I found the answer that the given parameters (maybe ncr_irq, ncr_addr??) are maybe wrong and then screen freeze as a result. But I haven't got the right parameters. Any solution to get the right parameters from the system? Or does this adapter/card work at anybody's system (my system: SuSE Linux 8.0)?

Sounds like the *best* ?? solution would be to purchase an inexpensive compatible SCSI card and go from there. gud luk, -- Patrick Shanahan Registered Linux User #207535 http://wahoo.no-ip.org @ http://counter.li.org

Another thought, might try booting Knoppix and seeing if it has drivers for the 53c400a. They would probably work in SuSE also. -- Patrick Shanahan Registered Linux User #207535 http://wahoo.no-ip.org @ http://counter.li.org
