Your posting interested me, so I installed mpd and gmpc, and I've edited the mpd.conf file to suit my setup, but it fails to build the database with the error sudo mpd --create-db listen: Failed to listen on *:6600: Address already in use Aborted I've checked in /etc/services and port 6600 is unassigned. Sorry not, but I noticed, that one have to be patient until the database is built. See man mpd and try /etc/init.d/mpd stop mpd --create-db It can take hours until the db is built. An update of the db in the background should be done in a few seconds / minutes depending on the files check with top. If mpd is running, the building of the db is still in progress. I don't remember the error I got, when I was impatient. If a find is running or other things with heavy disk load it can take a very very long time and it seems the updating to a new mpd / gmpc while the db is built was also a problem here. I don't know if I was not patient enough or if there is a bug. After a few hours I stopped it. So I recommend do 1 step after another. What I didn't find out till now, is, if the the db is updated after a new start of the system. If I have changes I update the db manually with gmpc. If you have questions you can ask at http://www.musicpd.org/forum Don't forget to be up-to-date with your covers the 1st time! Otherwise you have to reload all manually. I already said to the maintainer, that this is annoying. You also need to define the path in gmpc where the covers are from the beginning, otherwise they would be downloaded from the net if available. A workaround is gmpc --clean-cover-db but this reloads some existing (?) lyrics too and searches for unfound lyrics again. I would also like to mention, that my stereo is connected to the server a few rooms away and 2x2 loudspeakers are connected to different rooms. With gmpc I can control this with any client. I have been using SuSE/openSuSE for over 10 years and it is becoming obvious why other distros are finding favor.
Do to legal problems with mp3, openSUSE does not and has not shipped with mp3 support except for a short time when that support was provided via realaudio, iirc. This has been discussed (for lack of a more fitting description) many times at length on the opensuse list. You probably have previously added support for mp3 via packman repositories. It would cause less turmoil if you would get your facts straight before issuing fud and wild rantings condeming openSUSE. -- Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA HOG # US1244711 http://wahoo.no-ip.org Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2 Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://counter.li.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-multimedia+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-multimedia+help@opensuse.org

Amarok worked on this unit also in 11.2. It started failing on openSuSE 11.3 Milestone 2.#. It also look rather un-fixable at this point. The error message is "Phonon lacks mp3" something om version 2.2.git. The goodnews is that open SuSE's version plays one of several hundred artist. The Rippingtons only. They must be early mp# files. They are oggs - no wonder.

I can't confirm this, but unfortunately I am not able to create a useful bug report. Generally I would say, there are problems when there is heavy load on the hard drives and a lot of mp3s have to be updated. If it is a "lucky" situation amarok can be killed, otherwise only a hard reset helps. In normal situations amarok works now fine, but compared to mpd/gmpc very slow. Should I ever be able to write a useful bugreport I will do it, but I don't amarok use a lot anymore.
